Obituary

Garrett Alexander Queen, Sr., age 71, of Glen Alpine/Morganton, went home to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, July 26, 2014. Garrett was born the son of the late William Ervin Queen, Sr. and Mary Ellen Lewis Queen on April 14, 1943 in Morganton. He is a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, and a former coach of many baseball and football teams. Garrett served his country honorably during Vietnam in the U.S. Air Force. He was a former Commander of VFW Post 5362 in Morganton, and a member of the Chesterfield Ruritan Club. Garrett was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Garrett Alexander Queen, Sr., age 71, of Glen Alpine/Morganton, went home to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, July 26, 2014. Garrett was born the son of the late William Ervin Queen, Sr. and Mary Ellen Lewis Queen on April 14, 1943 in Morganton. He is a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, and a former coach of many baseball and football teams. Garrett served his country honorably during Vietnam in the U.S. Air Force. He was a former Commander of VFW Post 5362 in Morganton, and a member of the Chesterfield Ruritan Club. Garrett was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed.
Along with his parents, Garrett is preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Alex Queen.
Those left behind to cherish Garrett's memory include his wife of 51 years, Grace Queen of the home; a son, Garrett Queen, Jr. of High Point; a daughter, Melane Queen Williams and her husband, Scott of Morganton; a brother, William Ervin Queen, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Guyton, GA; four grandchildren, Cody Queen, Chelsey Queen, Marcus LaRoche and Micaela Queen; and a great granddaughter, Bonnie Pearl Durden. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 in the chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home with the Pastor Mark Myers officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors at St. Mary's Episcopal Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 till 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.
The family suggests that memorials be sent to VFW Post 5362, 551 Hopewell Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
