Gary Henry Beeks, LTC Retired, age 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 19, 2014. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Chattanooga, TN on May 24, 1945, Gary was the son of the late Charles Henry Beeks and Millie Ownbey Beeks. He was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School and Georgia State University. He is survived by his sister Jannie Beeks Rollison (Jake), nephew Jeremy Rollison (Lidia), a great nephew Caleb, a great niece Hannah, and numerous cousins. Gary Henry Beeks, LTC Retired, age 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 19, 2014. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Chattanooga, TN on May 24, 1945, Gary was the son of the late Charles Henry Beeks and Millie Ownbey Beeks. He was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School and Georgia State University. He is survived by his sister Jannie Beeks Rollison (Jake), nephew Jeremy Rollison (Lidia), a great nephew Caleb, a great niece Hannah, and numerous cousins. Gary was predeceased by his brother Joseph Travis Beeks. He was a former member of the Third Presbyterian Church. Gary was previously the owner and president of Beeks Jewelers, established by his father following WWII.



Gary began his 21 year military career in the U.S. Army in November 1970 at Ft. Gordon, GA. Duty stations included Ft. Monmouth, NJ; Ft. Jackson, SC; South Korea; Naval Station Norfolk, VA; Ft. McPherson, GA, and Desert Storm. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medals, Navy Commendation Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medals. He was awarded the Overseas Service Ribbon and three Southwest Asia Ribbons.



Gary was an avid fisherman with vacation homes in Georgia and Florida and participated in numerous fishing tournaments. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and took part in the Iron and Steel Motorcycle Escort Ride from New York City to Ft. Benning, GA, accompanying a steel beam from the World Trade Center. Gary also enjoyed hunting in Colorado and Nova Scotia. As an especially talented conversationalist, he loved spending time with family and friends.



Visitation will be held at Mackey Mortuary on Tuesday, July 22nd between the hours of 6-8:00pm. A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville at 2:00pm.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors Program or the American Cancer Society.
