Gary R. Connel, age 72, of Atwater, formerly of Rootstown, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Robinson Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 15, 1940, in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Foster Earl and Hazel A. (Daughtery) Connel. Gary was a proud veteran of the US Marine Corps. He retired from Babcock & Wilcox in Barberton, after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union Local 744, and served as a sponsor for many members of AA. Gary enjoyed fishing, boating, traveling, and riding his motorcycle.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years Kathy Connel; children: Terri (John) Clyde of Merrimack, NH, Carrie Connel of Cedar Rapids, IA, Chuck (Shary) Connel of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Lora Clyde of Houston, TX, and their mother, Geri Connel; as well as his 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his brother Charles Connel.
Friends will be received Sunday, April 21, 2013, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. Pastor David Ballert will officiate the funeral service immediately following at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place on a later date at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
