Gene Garrett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2014.

Gene Garrett, 77, of Acworth, died November 27, 2014. A memorial service will be held at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw on Friday, April 17, 2015 beginning at 2pm. Gene's family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Garrett was born in Adairsville and had served our country honorably in US Army; he was a patriot through and through. For 33 plus years, Gene worked for the Ford Motor Company and retired in 1997. Not one to sit idle, Mr. Garrett went to work for Kroger in Acworth where he earned another retirement but never truly retired because he was so loved there that Kroger would always send him an offer to return to work, which he did. He will be remembered as an amazing, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Joyce "Joe" Garrett of Acworth, sons – Allen Garrett of Ellijay and Glenn Garrett of Douglasville, daughters – Wanda Akins of Acworth and Kathy Loula of OK, brothers – Loyd Garrett of Macon and Herschel Garrett of OH, sisters – Nancy Ward of Manchester, Elsie Garrett of Austell and Margaret Bingham of Half Way, MS. There are also 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren which survive.

I only knew Gene through the Kroger Store in Acworth. Spoke to him almost every time I went shopping. Would call out to him as Colonel because he gave me a sense of goodness and kindness with respect. Sorry for your loss. Society has lost a good person. His family should be proud that this man had an ability to relate to everyone with a positive attitude no matter how good or bad your day was going. He inspired hope to people he never knew. How much better of a man can that be. NONE! JimC

I was babysitting for Gene on a New Year's Eve the night I met the fellow who turned out to be my husband. It is a long story but because Gene refused to tell the guy I had already gone home I was forced to go out with him. Turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. Hugs and prayers for family

I knew my Dad was an awesome man, compassionate, loving, and full of wit and wisdom.... I knew he had many friends, he never met a stranger. Today I visited the Kroger he worked at and read several of the messages on the stacks of posterboard on the memorial table his kroger family set up for him, it did my heart good to know he had so many people who he had touched their lives with joy. I'll miss him greatly, but I'm hornered to have had a dad who taught me to respect and love everyone and the ability to see humor even in the darkest moments, because laughter heals the soul. The greatest Joy to my heart is when people tell me they see my Dad in me. I LOVE YOU DAD

I'm just a customer from Kroger, but I've been in tears all night upon hearing of his passing. He was just the best. I loved chatting with him and I hope that his family is comforted during this time. My prayers go out to y'all tonight. If I'm this upset, I can only imagine how much more you all are. He was truly a wonderful man! My family is heartbroken! Thank you Gene for providing a wonderful example of how to be a caring, yet hard worker. My boys will miss seeing you- my oldest boy was crying tonight when I told him the news. He really touched all of our lives!

Gene was always a bright spot in my day. He always had a smile and a great story for me every time I saw him at Kroger. My favorite memory is from last Christmas when he shared a little bit about his time in the army. I know I will miss seeing him and sharing stories. I can only offer my deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.
