Gene Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 13, 2015.

DAVIS, Captain Gene Franklin, USMC (Retired), age 79, died July 13, 2015 at his home, after a long battle with lung disease. A resident of Midlothian, Va., he was born to the late John and Pauline Davis on May 24, 1936 in Wytheville, Va. Captain Davis is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Bonnie Davis; three children, Teresa McGee, Linda Giannini, Sherrie Bingham; and five grandchildren.

Gene served in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years and is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served two tours. During this time he distinguished himself by earning a battlefield commission and several medals including the Silver Star, Purple Heart and South Vietnamese Medal of Gallantry. He also received other commendations for his dedication and bravery. The discipline and patriotism he exhibited as a Marine never left him, as his friends and family will attest.

After his retirement from the military, Gene opened his business, D&S Construction Company, which he and his business partners ran successfully for many years. This success in business can be directly attributed to his tenacity and work ethic. Gene retired from his business to pursue his other passions, travel and golf.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, Va. The funeral services will take place on Friday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at Victory Tabernacle Church of God, 11700 Genito Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23112. Interment will follow with military honors at Dale Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to VFW Post 6364, Attn: Commander Mike Dunham, 6502 Dickens Place, Richmond, Va. 23230, phone: (804) 288-9597. Condolences may be left at woodyfuneralhomehuguenot.com.

Gene lived out the high standards of being an officer and a gentleman. It was my rich honor to know him as a friend. Our hearts are heavy here as we hear taps but joyous knowing that he is answering reveille in his Heavenly home.

It is difficult to convey what a great pleasure it was to meet Captain Davis and Bonnie at their home. While I only knew him a short time, he is certainly a proud, thoughtful and wonderful person. His long military service and the awards he was presented are offset by his humble and unassuming manner. Our hearts go out to Bonnie and the Davis family during this time.

From all of us here at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6364 and members of the Marine family everywhere. Semper Fi

My thoughts are with you today Bonnie. What pleasant memories I have of "Genie Boy". Just visiting over the fence or sitting on the back porch or bragging about the size of each other's tomatoes or commenting on my backyard chickens. He made his mark on this nation with his outstanding military service and on the hearts of all who knew him. The memory of this good man will be with me always.

Bonnie, Sherrie and family, Gene was a great man. Having purchased his business when he decided to retire, he was always helpful and involved in our success. I am sure he was a grate husband and father and will be missed by his family and friends. May God be with you at this time.

Gene was a neighborhood acquaintance with the old yellow school bus as his motor home. That bus evolved into a much nicer class A. As a new RVer Gene was very helpful in showing me the ropes to this new kind of "camping"
As my wife and I head off this Thursday, to Pocahontas State Park we will pause as we drive by his residence and remember Gene for the wonderful gentleman he was.......Thanks for all your help my friend.....
