Gene Noble Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2013.

Gene E. Noble, 89, of Davenport, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society in Davenport, IA.

He was born January 16, 1924 in Flushing, NY, the son of Leroy Beaumont and Thelma (Appell) Noble. He graduated from Rutland High School in 1940. He then attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. beginning in 1941 but left Wesleyan in his sophomore year to volunteer for the newly formed 10th Mountain Division of the US Army. He returned to Wesleyan after the war and graduated in 1946.

He was united in marriage to June P. Haseltine, his high school sweetheart, on December 19, 1945.

After volunteering for the 10th Mountain Division, he spent three years in the service, training at Camp Hale in Colorado as well as in Texas before deploying to Italy. He achieved the rank of T/4 (Sgt) and received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star.

Gene was co-owner and General Manager and Treasurer of the Rutland Daily Herald for over 40 years until his retirement in 1986, during which time he oversaw the innovations of photo composition, off-set printing and 7 day/week publication as well as the acquisition of The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus. He sat on the Board of Directors for The Rutland Daily Herald, The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus, Rutland Country Club, Rutland Hospital, The Marble Bank (Rutland) and The New England Daily Newspaper Association. He was a member of the Rutland School Board, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Rutland Country Club and Grace Congregational Church.

Upon retirement, he and his wife built a second home in Naples, FL and split their time between Naples and Rutland until June's death in 2003. In 2005, Gene moved to Davenport, IA to be closer to his daughter. A highlight of his later years was visiting the WWII Memorial on the Honor Flight. He enjoyed playing tennis, was an avid golfer, loved to read and do New York Times crossword puzzles and watch sports.

He is survived by his daughters: Lynne Gallipo, Phoenix, AZ; Kim Noble, Brattleboro, VT and Kyle (Tim) Moe, Davenport, IA; grandchildren: J. Michael Gallipo, New Hampshire, Courtney Gallipo, Phoenix, AZ, Dana Moe and Blake Moe, both of Davenport and great grandchildren, Jay Gallipo and Sean Gallipo, both of Dover, NH. He was preceded in death by his wife, June, sister-in-law, Janice Haseltine, cousin and his wife, Leonard and Ednah Appell and his parents.

Gene's family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the Good Samaritan Center for their skilled and compassionate care during his extended illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Home at Last, Inc. PO Box 6104 Brattleboro, VT 05302 (providing housing to homeless veterans) or to the Honor Flight Program. Per Gene's wishes, he will be cremated and buried in Rutland, VT. A memorial service will be held locally in the near future with the date still to be determined.

To the Noble family -- I can not tell you how much I admired Oma and Opa. I could write a volume here about what I remember about visiting them, or what I liked about them, but I just want to say for now that I will think of Oma every night at 5 when I have a glass of wine and of Opa every time one of the kids cracks a really corny groaner of a joke. They were wonderful people, and their character and generosity has affected my life in so many ways. I feel blessed to have known them and all of you. I am so sorry for your loss, but happy for them that they are together, where they belong. Love, Linda
