Obituary

Mr. Westberg was born on September 20, 1926 in Portland, Oregon. He was an alumnus of Washington High School, Lewis & Clark College, and the University of Oregon at which he earned a Bachelors of Architecture degree in 1952. He spent two years in the military and during World War II, completing service as G-1, First Army Headquarters, Governors Island NYC, rank Sergeant. He married Jacqueline Sherbert in 1952; their 61rst anniversary would be this November. He conducted a private practice of Architecture in Portland from 1957 to 1964. Mr. Westberg was born on September 20, 1926 in Portland, Oregon. He was an alumnus of Washington High School, Lewis & Clark College, and the University of Oregon at which he earned a Bachelors of Architecture degree in 1952. He spent two years in the military and during World War II, completing service as G-1, First Army Headquarters, Governors Island NYC, rank Sergeant.

He married Jacqueline Sherbert in 1952; their 61rst anniversary would be this November. He conducted a private practice of Architecture in Portland from 1957 to 1964. He was Preservation Officer, American Institute of Architects, for Oregon from 1961 to 1964, during which time he initiated a successful program soliciting support for preservation of the historic Pioneer Courthouse. Previous to professional practice, his architectural apprenticeship included training in offices of Burton Goodrich, Wick & Hilgers AIA, Herman Brookman FAIA, and Richard Marlitt, AIA.

Mr. Westberg was employed as Staff Architect by Portland Public Schools from 1964 to 1979 and Facilities Planning Director from 1979 to 1990. He retired from Portland Public Schools in June 1990.

Gene loved nature, particularly of the Pacific NW, he loved his Church and he dearly loved his family.

Besides Mrs. Westberg, he is survived by sons, Douglas J. Westberg of Vancouver, Washington, Philip G. Westberg, of Tacoma, Washington, Bernard D. Westberg of Portland, Oregon, Richard C. Westberg of Vancouver, Washington, daughter, Mrs. Christina Smith of Seattle, Washington and six grandchildren. Two sons preceded him in death, first born infant, David P. Westberg and Robert F. Westberg, who died at age 36 in 1993.

Mr. Westberg was a member of the Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon and Tigard, Oregon.

Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for Memorial Masses to St Thomas More church or to the Special Olympics charity.
