George Deane Allen, 79, of LaGrange died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, GA. Mr. Allen was born June 9, 1933, in West Point, Troup County, GA, the only child of William Hugh and Gertrude Weaver Allen. Mr. Allen graduated from West Point High School in 1951 and attended Auburn University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corp, a member of The National Society of the Sons of The American Revolution, and a lifetime member of The Telephone Pioneers of America. George Deane Allen, 79, of LaGrange died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, GA.

Mr. Allen was born June 9, 1933, in West Point, Troup County, GA, the only child of William Hugh and Gertrude Weaver Allen. Mr. Allen graduated from West Point High School in 1951 and attended Auburn University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corp, a member of The National Society of the Sons of The American Revolution, and a lifetime member of The Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mr. Allen served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. After basic training he was assigned to the U.S. Army Signal Corp School at Fort Gordon where he was trained to maintain various telecommunications systems and equipment. After his training he was assigned to Wire Company of the 17th Signal Battalion in Pirmasens, Germany. He was in charge of the Battalion Telephone Maintenance Shop where he was responsible for repair of telephone switchboards and other telecommunications equipment.

Mr. Allen retired in 1994 after 39 years of service with AT&T, BellSouth, and Southern Bell. While employed by AT&T he served as a manager in Operations and Sales as well as Headquarters Engineering, Marketing, and Regulatory. While at BellSouth/Southern Bell he was a manager in Rates/Tariffs, Regulatory Support, and Marketing. In 1990 he received the "Golden Eagle" award for designing a unique data communications system for one of BellSouth's large customers.

In 1996 he served as a volunteer to load data on computers for the 1996 Special Olympics in Atlanta, GA.

Mr. Allen was a Charter member of Northbrook United Methodist Church, Roswell, GA and served as its first Finance Committee Chairman. He received the "Flame and Cross" award from Northbrook for "Outstanding Service to the Youth and Children of Northbrook" as well as his work as Troop Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 841 of Crabapple, GA. More recently, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange and the "Pairs and Spares" Sunday School Class.

He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Anne Childs Allen of LaGrange; two sons, Andrew Christopher Allen of Flagstaff, AZ and Anthony Kevin Allen of Queen Creek, AZ.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 31, 2013 at First United Methodist Church of LaGrange with Dr. Harold Lawrence and Dr. John Simmons officiating. The family will be at the home of his wife, Anne Childs Allen, and will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
