GEORGE L. CALKINS, JR. Loudon – George L. Calkins, Jr., 81, formerly of Concord and Wolfeboro, NH, died on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Southern NH Medical Center, in Nashua. Mr. Calkins was born on September 27, 1932, in Concord, NH, the son of the late George L. and Wilena B. (Matatall) Calkins. He attended Concord High School and was an accomplished pitcher for their baseball team. He was such an accomplished high school pitcher that a group of Brooklyn Dodgers Scouts selected him to attend one of their club training camps, in Maryland. Loudon – George L. Calkins, Jr., 81, formerly of Concord and Wolfeboro, NH, died on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Southern NH Medical Center, in Nashua.
Mr. Calkins was born on September 27, 1932, in Concord, NH, the son of the late George L. and Wilena B. (Matatall) Calkins.
He attended Concord High School and was an accomplished pitcher for their baseball team. He was such an accomplished high school pitcher that a group of Brooklyn Dodgers Scouts selected him to attend one of their club training camps, in Maryland. However, Mr. Calkins passed it up to join the United States Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War.
Prior to retirement, Mr. Calkins was employed as a civil engineer Surveyor for the State of New Hampshire.
Mr. Calkins hobbies and interests included; fishing and boating. He also enjoyed bowling and was city/state champ for many years. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Mr. Calkins enjoyed spending time with his wife, pets, and gardening.
Members of his family include; his wife of 60 years, Yvette T. (St. Ambadges) Calkins, of Loudon, NH; three sons, Bruce and his wife, Rita Calkins, of Concord; Thomas Calkins and family, of Concord; William Calkins, and his wife Debbie, of Concord, NH; three daughters, Jane LaPlante and her partner, Maurice Tremblay, of Wolfeboro, NH; Amanda Calkins and family, of Manchester; Laura Calkins and her partner, Robert Warpula, of Peterborough, NH; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren, a sister, Margaret Woods, of Penacook, NH; nieces and nephews. Mr. Calkins was predeceased by his grandson, Jeremy LaPlante.
His extended family in Canada from both Ontario and Nova Scotia had remained close and were an important part of his life.
SERVICES: Calling hours will be Thursday, June 12, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at The Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main Street, in Concord. A funeral service will be held on Friday, 12 Noon, in the funeral home chapel. Committal prayers followed by military honors will take place at 1:30 PM at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.
It has been suggested that those who wish may make memorial gifts to the American Legion Christmas Fund, in memory of Mr. Calkins.
