George Cytroen, M.D., 88, died on Friday, February 3, 2012. George was born in New York City in 1923 and was a member of the Framingham, MA community since 1951.
George is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Judith Cytroen and his two children; Pamela Cytroen Chabot, Andrew Cytroen and his wife Anda, and his cherished grandchildren, Rebecca Chabot; and Samuel Cytroen; Alexander Cytroen; and, Jacob Cytroen.
George graduated from Columbia College in 1944 and from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1947. George came to Boston in 1947 to be an intern at Boston City Hospital. He completed several residencies including Yale, Hartford Hospital, and Children's Hospital Boston and was a Fellow in Medicine at the House of the Good Samaritan at Harvard Medical School. George also taught medicine at graduate and postgraduate levels at Harvard Medical School and Boston University.
After completing his training in Internal Medicine, George worked at the Framingham Heart Study as part of the Public Health Service during the Korean War. In 1956, George began a private practice specializing in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Framingham before retiring in 1996.
George had remarkable diagnostic abilities and was guided by his strong desire to help people and improve the quality of their lives. He truly loved medicine and being kind to people, which was reciprocated by his devoted and appreciative patients. Throughout his 88 years, George was an incredible mentor and teacher from which he derived immense pleasure.
Dr. Cytroen had a keen sense of humor and wit. He had a lifetime passion for learning. His love of languages, geography, history, people of all ages and ethnicities, astronomy, nature, math, science, the arts and travel were obvious to many.
Above all, George was a loving, caring and supportive son, husband, father and grandfather, completely devoted to his family. He and Judith enjoyed attending concerts and performances, traveling, going on long walks, taking educational courses and spending time with each other, their loving children and grandchildren.
A private burial was held on February 5, 2012.
The family requests remembrances be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute (www.dana-farber.org) and Children's Hospital Boston (www.childrenshospital.org).
Arrangements under the direction of Levine Chapels, Brookline, MA.
