George R. Gaines, 71, of Hampstead, died January 4, 2016.
After many years of failing health, we lost a wonderful man. George was the fourteenth of sixteen children of Carl and Laura Gaines, of Goldston, NC.
He was known for his wonderful smile, personality, generosity, and never meeting a stranger.
As a Master Barber he had one of the largest clienteles in Wilmington working at Seagate Barber Shop, Hanover Barber Shop, and later owning Ogden Barber Shop.
As an avid fisherman he enjoyed many a day on the water. He loved sharing his knowledge and stories of successful catches.
Heart broken, his wife Rachel and step daughter, Amanda Hassell Scott will be forever grateful to have been loved by this special man.
There are so many people in his life that could be named, but we can only mention several. His ex-wife, Linda Newell Newber of Wilmington, Dudley Malpass, who visited often and our friend Reta McGuire, who was always with us during our hospital stays and helped us to recover.
At his request, there will be a simple celebration of life at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC, on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 7-9 p.m.
A grave side service will be held on January 9, 2016 at 2 p.m., at Antioch Baptist Church on Goldston-Glendon Road in Goldston, NC. Family will receive friends afterwards in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or to ones charity of choice.

I'm pretty sure I've known George all my life. My first memories of him are when my Papa (Charlie Simmons) would take me to Hanover Barber when he got his hair cut. I'm very sorry to hear of George's passing. He was a great guy!

Dear Rachel, it is with regret that I heard from Ann about the passing of your dear husband George. It was only last week that Vicky told me he was doing well, recovering from surgery. Sadly I cannot attend his funeral as I am now in Florida, but my prayers are with you and I will say one tonight for George.
May the peace of the Lord be with you.
With sympathy,
Jack
