Mr. George Larry Helms, age 71, passed away Friday morning, March 14, 2014, in Hospice of Union County, located in Monroe, N.C.

Mr. Helms was born February 28, 1943 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He is the son of Eleanor Baucom Helms of Monroe, and the late George Benton Helms (G.B.).

Mr. Helms is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Braswell Helms of the home, (two) daughters: Leah Helms Davis and husband John of Monroe, N.C., and Amy Helms Pressley and husband Scott of Monroe, N.C, (three) grandchildren: Jonathon Luke Davis of Monroe, N.C., Hannah Blair Davis of Monroe, N.C., and Marvin Scott Pressley II of Monroe, N.C., and (one) brother: Dr. Donald Benton Helms and wife Janice Barber Helms of Lumberton, N.C.

The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation, Sunday afternoon, March 16, 2014, in the sanctuary of Mill Creek Baptist Church, located at 5417 Morgan Mill Road, Monroe, N.C. 28110, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. George Larry Helms will be held immediately in the sanctuary following the visitation, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The service will be officiated by the Reverend George Hunnicutt, Reverend Marvin Tyson, and Reverend George Gouge. Burial will be held on Monday, March 17, 2014, at 11: 00 a.m., at Lakeland Memorial Park, located at 1901 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mill Creek Baptist Church, 5417 Morgan Mill Road, Monroe, N.C. 28110 or to Hospice of Union County, 700 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, N.C. 28110.

The family would like to recognize Union Family Practice, Carolinas Medical Center–Union, Home Health Care, Hospice of Union County, (Carolinas Healthcare Systems), the Brian Center and Monroe Manor, for the love and care that was shown to Larry and his entire family, going beyond the call of duty.

Larry had a kind and gentle spirit and he was a true Southern gentleman as well as a loyal friend. He always had an encouraging word and we will remember him fondly.
