Our Great Friend George Thomas Ruhberg peacefully passed away in his home 8/3/2014. George was born in the foot hills of the Blue Mountains a few miles East of Milton-Freewater on March 1, 1916, in the family farm house . He was the son of a Farmer, Thomas Ruhberg and a Schoolteacher, Mary (Vanderhoff) Ruhberg. George's sister Betty and half-brother Phillip Williams have preceded him. In 1936 George joined the US Marine Corps. George was proud to have been a Marine, and his every thought and action has brought credit to the Corps.
While on active duty in Astoria in 1939, George met Dorothy Grant. They became close friends and married in Los Angeles in 1942. They spent much of their early marriage apart while George served on the front lines in three wars: the Second Sino Japanese War, World War II, and the Korean Conflict. When asked about the famous Korean Battle of Chosin Reservoir (it is called "The Frozen Chosin"), George answered, "I never had time to worry about being cold. I was too worried about my men." George retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer in 1961.
George and Dorothy moved to the Portland area in 1961 and George began a second career as an Accountant for Pacific Power and Light, retiring in 1980. In retirement, he began simultaneous careers as a Freemason and as a volunteer.
George became a Mason in 1964, joining Beaverton Masonic Lodge #100. He quickly moved into Lodge leadership. During his Masonic Career, George served as Master of three lodges, Beaverton #100, Sherwood Midday Lodge #164 and twice was Master of Oregon Military Lodge #223. George also served as an officer in Grand Lodge, and was active in the Portland Valley of Scottish Rite, York Rite, and AL Kadar Shrine.
George's career as a volunteer was just as epic as his other careers. From 1979 to 2002 he volunteered for the Veterans Hospital and for Shrine Hospital in Portland. He was also a very active member of the Beaverton Methodist Church, and led the Men's group until 2002, when Dorothy passed away. He also tutored children, volunteering for the SMART program in Beaverton. Often his volunteer hours were more than what would normally be considered to be a full time job.
In 2009 George surprised us all by donating one million dollars to the Shrine Hospital. George was ever humble, and never lived a life that hinted of wealth. His life could be an example to us all, living thriftfully, always taking good care of available resources.
In 2013 George was diagnosed with cancer. On August 3, 2014, George moved peacefully and with dignity to that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. George was survived by a loving family of many Nieces and Nephews, his large Masonic family, and his Church Family. A memorial service for George will be held at the Beaverton First United Methodist Church, at 3:00 pm on 9/13/2014. Donations in his name may be made to George's favorite charity, the Shrine Hospital.
We love you George.
