Obituary

George Robert Utting, 89, of West Melbourne, FL passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at West Melbourne Heath and Rehabilitation Center. He was a member of the Grumpy Old Sailors. Born in Highland Park, MI, George came to Brevard Country from Connecticut in 1971. The following is a list of Mr. Uttings many accomplishments throughout his life. 1943-46 Cornell University, Navy V-5 Program, Graduated BSEE, MEE, with minor in Physics Veteran of the U. S. George Robert Utting, 89, of West Melbourne, FL passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at West Melbourne Heath and Rehabilitation Center. He was a member of the Grumpy Old Sailors.

Born in Highland Park, MI, George came to Brevard Country from Connecticut in 1971.

The following is a list of Mr. Uttings many accomplishments throughout his life.

1943-46 Cornell University, Navy V-5 Program, Graduated BSEE, MEE, with minor in Physics
Veteran of the U. S. Navy

1946-1948 Cornell University, Instructor of Electrical Engineering and working on PhD. Taught graduate courses in electromagnetic wave theory, and millimeter wave transmission. He said he "was fortunate to study under Hans Bethe, Philip Morrison, and Richard Feynman, all who had worked on the Manhattan Project, and two of whom were Nobel laureates in Physics.

1949-1952 Engineer, Tracerlab, Inc. Boston, MA. Designed Radiac set Type A-1 for U.S. Air Force to monitor the first Russian atomic bomb tests by collecting filter papers from RB-57s flying over Russia night and day. Designed numerous other commercial laboratory nuclear measurement instruments. Position on leaving: Chief Engineer, Laboratory instruments.

1953-1954 Chief Engineer, Atomic Instrument Corp., Cambridge, MA.

1954-1959 Founded Technical Measurement Corp., North Haven, CT. Designed and manufactured instruments for nuclear physics research. Produced first solid state multichannel pulse height analyzer. Sold interest in company 1959.

1960-1969 Founded and was President of Intertech, Inc., North Haven, CT as a subsidiary of Picker X-Ray Corp. Designed numerous instruments, including the Hemolitre for the measurement of blood volume. The company became the Nuclear and Ultrasound Division of Picker. Sold interest in Company in 1969.

1970 Vice President, Picker X-Ray Corporation

1971-1974 Took time off, sailed to Florida, married Emalyn, bought a house, and sailed the Bahamas.

1974-1978 Founded RMI, Inc. as a subsidiary of Radiation Medical Products, Inc. Designed and manufactured over 25 instruments for radiation measurement in nuclear and oncology fields. Radiation Medical Products was bought by Victoreen, Inc. a subsidiary of Shellar Globe Corporation. Sold interest in company 1978.

1979 Vice President, Victoreen, Inc.

1978-1983 General Manager, RMI Division, Vicotreen, Inc.

1983-1993 Founded Theta Systems, Inc. Designed and manufactured laboratory radiation measurement instruments and smoke opacity instruments for the measurement of diesel truck and bus emissions. Sold company and retired in 1993.

Sailed over 20,000 miles in the Bahamas with his beloved wife Emalyn, who preceded him in death in 2010.

George is survived by Richard Tyler Utting of Lodi, CA; Elisabeth Utting of Spring Grove, PA and Joyce Utting Schutter of Sandwich, MA. George is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
