Our beloved George Harold Williamson passed away peacefully at his home in Greenwich, CT Tuesday afternoon March 26th with his wife, Sue Ann, at his side. George will be lovingly missed by his sons Jesse and Thomas Williamson, his daughter Emily Williamson Friedman and her husband, Ethan Friedman, his step-daughters, Vaughn Massey and Lee Massey Heekin, her husband Jim Heekin and his grandchildren, James and Gray Heekin.
He was born April 2, 1945 in Rock Island, IL. He was a graduate of Iowa State University and The Wharton School of Business. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served at staff headquarters in Long Binh. His banking career began at Chase Manhattan in 1971 and concluded at JP Morgan Chase where he managed Traders of US Treasury securities in New York, London, and Japan. Following his 30 years in the financial markets, George made an unusual career shift. He returned to school and received a degree in Physical Therapy from New York University. Most recently he worked with patients at The Rusk Institute and as a therapist in a private rehabilitation facility in NYC. He found it rewarding to be able to help others in a tangible way.
George lived for many years in Montclair, NJ, and Bridgehampton, NY, where he and his first wife, Patience Halsey Sherman, raised their three children. Many of his life-long friendships were developed in those communities. Since 2004 George has lived in Greenwich, CT. with his wife, Sue Ann Massey Williamson. He was an active member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church where he was treasurer for three years, and he especially enjoyed being a part of their magnificent choir. During their summers George and Sue Ann gathered family and friends together in the Adirondacks. Until 2 ½ weeks ago George could be found every morning at six a.m. in the Fitness Center, an important part of his regimen in his battle against pancreatic cancer.
George was an honored family patriarch to his many nieces and nephews from the extended Williamson clan. His 94-year-old mother, Martha, of Sun City, AZ preceded him in death earlier the same day.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 7th at 2:00pm at St. Barnabas Church in Greenwich, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the music program at St. Barnabas Church or to the Home Hospice program at Greenwich Hospital.
