Gerald Thomas "Jerry" Ashabranner 74 years of age died Monday October 25, 2010 at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. Jerry was born November 27, 1935 in New Albany to the late William and Stella (Bunch) Ashabranner. He was an Army veteran and a former employee with the old Taystee Bakery Louisville. Jerry was active with the Clarksville Little Generals Football League, Clarksville Little League, a 40 year volunteer with Parkwood Elementary School, and a judge for "Odyssey of the Mind" Student Achievement Program on the regional and world levels. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, American Legion Post #35 in Jeffersonville, and a 30 year member of Clarksville Optimist Club. Jerry was preceded in death by his brothers William and Richard Ashabranner, and sisters Stella Hancock and Martha Dempsey.
Survivors include wife of 30 years, Peggy Ashabranner; sons Kevin Thomas Ashabranner of Sellersburg, IN, James Brian Ashabranner of Nashville, TN; daughter Kim Marie Kruer (Joseph) of Greenville, IN; step-sons Gregory Steven Lawson of New Albany, IN, Jeffery Scott Lawson (Shannon) of Clarksville, IN; step-daughter Karen Lynn Lawson of Jeffersonville, IN sisters Letha Marie Andres of New Albany, IN, Cleo Jane Prechtel of Jeffersonville, IN; grandchildren Elizabeth Marie Kruer Hutchins, Joseph Patrick Forest Kruer, Brandon Steven Lawson, Brent Scott Lawson, and Aaron Joseph Lawson; great grandchildren Karlie Marie Hutchins and Kyle Patrick Hutchins; numerous nieces and nephews
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. His Funeral Service will be held 10:00 am Friday at the Kraft Funeral Chapel with entombment and military honors to follow in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to First Baptist Church of Jeffersonville Romania Mission Fund, American Diabetes Association, or Alzheimer's Association. I have known "Papaw Jerry" for a long time. I work at Parkwood Elementary where Papaw Jerry volunteered for over 40 years. The dedication he showed to Parkwood Elementary was amazing, but even more amazing was the interaction he had with the kids there. He would walk in the building and kids would leap out of their seats to come and give "Papaw" a big bear hug. He was a very kind and giving man and he will be missed. May God Bless his family.
