SUDBURY – Gerald Emil Cubelli died at his home on Sunday June 29. He was born on February 2, 1919 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of the late Joseph and Jennie (Cerreta) Cubelli. He is survived by his wife Mary (Gibson) Cubelli; his children Jane Cubelli and her husband Joe Blackburn, Gerald J. Cubelli, Lisa Cubelli, and his grandson Nicholas Cornetta. He is also survived by his sister Beatrice (Cubelli) Riccio of Naples, Florida. He was predeceased by his sister Antionette Mayeran of Columbia, South Carolina. SUDBURY – Gerald Emil Cubelli died at his home on Sunday June 29. He was born on February 2, 1919 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of the late Joseph and Jennie (Cerreta) Cubelli.

He is survived by his wife Mary (Gibson) Cubelli; his children Jane Cubelli and her husband Joe Blackburn, Gerald J. Cubelli, Lisa Cubelli, and his grandson Nicholas Cornetta. He is also survived by his sister Beatrice (Cubelli) Riccio of Naples, Florida. He was predeceased by his sister Antionette Mayeran of Columbia, South Carolina.

Gerald graduated from Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport in 1935 where he was a National Honor Society member and a Tennis Team Letterman. He graduated from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio in 1942, where he had been a member of the Gold Key Honorary Society, Editor of the College Newspaper, President of his fraternity, and a student council member. While at Marietta, he learned to fly through the Civilian Pilot Training Program and went directly into the US ARMY Air Force upon graduation. He was assigned as a flight instructor and taught ARMY Aviation Cadets until 1944 when he underwent advanced flight training and was assigned to fly twin-engine transports in North Africa and the Middle East until he was honorably discharged.

After discharge from the ARMY Air Force, he entered the New York School of Social Work at Columbia University and was awarded a Master's Degree in Medical Social Work in 1948. He spent four years working for the state of Connecticut in what was at that time clinics for handicapped children. He then directed rehab centers in Worcester, Massachusetts and New Rochelle, New York. In 1960 he was called to teach at the Harvard School of Public Health and then in 1962 he moved to the Harvard Medical School, Department of Psychiatry where he directed a program for rehabilitation counselors working with mentally ill clients in the State Vocational Rehabilitation Programs.

In 1973 he assumed the position of Director of Social Service at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston, retiring in 1981.

A memorial service will be held at St. Elizabeth's Church, One Morse Road, SUDBURY, on Saturday July 12, at 1 o'clock PM.
