Geraldine Dameron Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 23, 2017.

COLUMBIA - Jerry Dameron – wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and active volunteer – lived a busy and fulfilling life. Outgoing and caring, she was well-known and loved in her community wherever she lived.

Jerry grew up in Colorado: Canon City, Colorado Springs and Denver, and received her Associate of Arts degree from Colorado College. She had a part-time career as a model and film editor, and her pre-med training facilitated her early work as a “stewardess” on Braniff Airways, where she met her husband of 74 years, Captain Bill Dameron. After several moves she raised her two children mostly in Atlanta before Bill and Jerry moved to Columbia to be near their daughter in 1987.

For nearly 65 years Jerry was an active and knowledgeable member and leader of her local Episcopal church altar guild. Using her training once again she was a Nurse’s Aide for the American Red Cross for nearly a decade and enjoyed working for Literacy Action in the inner city (Atlanta) and helping teach English as a second language. At Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in Columbia she was active for over 20 years in the Altar Guild and helping in the library.

Jerry was devoted to Bill, who passed away in 2015. She also helped guide through life her two children, Bill Dameron of Portland Oregon and Linda Dameron of Monument Colorado, as well as three grandchildren: Phoebe Dameron, Danville, CA, Leslie Lowe, Florence, S.C., and Lanny Correll, Richmond VA. She also leaves behind four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, March 27 at The Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in Columbia, S.C.

Donations in memory of Jerry may be made to the Still Hopes Residents Assistance Fund, Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, One Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia S.C. 29169 (https://www.stillhopes.org/donate).

Linda, your Mother was such a dear person with so much energery and never complained while taking care of your Father. I enjoyed watching them enjoy life while I worked at SH's. They were truly wonderful people. You were blessed to have great parents.

We are very sad to hear of Jerry's passing. Sad we can't have one more visit with her. But happy to know she is resting now. I had been thinking of her lately and planning to call her. I always think of her when the Azaleas start to bloom. They are all around my yard, the "baby" azaleas she gave me years ago. She shared Iris bulbs and other cuttings too. I first met Jerry when she and Bill moved to Windy Road in Gilbert in 1984. I went over to welcome them to the neighborhood and so began a 30 year friendship. Woody and I didn't have any family here and a small circle of friends. I am happy to say the Damerons became very dear to us. Always enjoyed hearing about their travels and places they had lived. They were not boisterous people. You would have to ask questions. But they were proud of their family. Their success and accomplishments. Loved hearing about their younger years, how they met.We have many little gifts and post cards, saved over time. Jerry brought me a little charm from Mt Rushmore time. And Laura still cherishes the earrings Bill Jr sent her from Africa. She always showed interest in how our children were doing, remembered birthdays and Christmas. Usually books or something educational. She permoted my love of birds and sea shells. She had some beautiful shells. Showed me how to clean and preserve them. I still want to go to Sanibel someday. She said they had the best shells.
We continued to stay in touch when they moved to Stillhope. We enjoyed visiting them there. It has grown so much. Jerry liked to take us on the tour, showing all the new buildings, gym etc. Enjoyed lunch in the dining hall a few times. We took our old Plymouth out there one time and took her for a ride. She really enjoyed that, and so did we. I last talked to her around Christmas. We usually talked a few times a year. Exchanged cards. We had shared wedding anniversaries, Feb 14. Only 40 years apart. To the family we would say, "You were so blessed to have such a wonderful Mother/Grandmother. And we were blessed to have her in our life. Jerry will be missed, remembered, and loved.
