Gertrude M. (Clark) Ehlers of Davenport died peacefully July 9, 2014 at Ridgecrest Retirement Village, Davenport, IA. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM July 15, 2014 at Newcomb Presbyterian Church with an informal visitation at the church at 1:00 PM. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Newcomb Presbyterian Church, the Ridgecrest Koning Charitable Fund, or a charity of one's choice. She was born April 6, 1922 in LeClaire, IA to Raymond and Elsie (Lohse) Clark. She married Hugo Ehlers on July 12, 1952 in Davenport, IA. He preceded her in death in 2011. Gertrude was a physical education teacher in Marshalltown, IA, the Davenport Community Schools, and Marycrest College. She served as Health Director at the Moline YWCA for two years. Prior to teaching she was employed at the John Soller Construction Co. and the Old Scott County Court House Old Age Assistance as a stenographer. During the war, she was employed at the Rock Island Ordinance Depot. She graduated from the Davenport High School where she played on the tennis team and from the University of Iowa with a B.S. degree in P. E.
She was a member of the Plus 60 Club, RSVP, Davenport Retired Teachers Association, and Descendants of Pioneer Settlers (past president). Gertrude was a 60 year member of Newcomb Presbyterian Church where she served as elder, was president of the Women's Association, and president of Church Women United of Davenport. She was a former member of the American-Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society, the Friendship Force, the Putnam Museum, the 50th Wedding Club, and the American Association of University Women. She was a Girl Scout leader for four years, delivered meals for seven years, taught Laubach Literacy Reading for 20 years, and has a 60-year service pin from the Red Cross having served at Genesis for 30 years. She was a former Water Safety Instructor and was active in the Befriender Program for her church for many years.
She was a past city bowling champion and participated in golf, tennis, and square dancing. She won many medals in the Senior Olympics. She received the "Hug Award" at Adams school for tutoring first graders for six years.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Carla Ehlers of Cypress, TX, her daughter Pamela and son-in-law Gavin Slater of Broomfield, CO, two grandchildren, Amanda Slater of Silverthorne, CO and Evan Slater of Greensboro, NC, a brother, Lavern R. Clark of Sun City West, AZ, and several nieces and nephews.
