BARKAS, GLADYS ROSE-née Hodes, 90, of Stamford, CT, formerly of Bayside, NY, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013. Married for 54 years to the late Dr. William Barkas. Survived by her sister Peggy Silver, daughters Eileen (Richard Hoffman) and Jan (Fred Yager), and daughter-in-law Karen Lobovits (the late Seth Alan Barkas); grandchildren Vanessa, Scott, Jeffrey, Ariel, and Sky; and great-grandchildren Bradley, Seth, Lily, and Coral Mist. Predeceased by her brother, Dr. Selig Hodes. Glady was born and grew up in Brooklyn, where she attended Thomas Jefferson H.S. and Brooklyn College, later earning her M.A. at Queens College. She was a dedicated and imaginative kindergarten teacher, composing songs and creating programs at P.S. 146 in Howard Beach. She enjoyed tennis, community singing, her many friends, and her family. Services at 11 A.M. Sunday, January 13, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. Interment to follow, at 1 P.M., New Montefiore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute in her memory to the Seth Alan Barkas Fund at New York University, PO Box 29303, New York, NY 10117.
