Gloria N. Barrett, 84, lifelong resident of Brattleboro, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Pine Heights Nursing Center in Brattleboro, VT. She was born on May 12, 1929, the daughter of the late Sydney T. and Violetta (Macy) Nixon.

Gloria was educated in the Brattleboro school system, graduating from Brattleboro High School. She was employed as a Nurse's Aide at Pine Heights Nursing home before her retirement. Gloria was very active within her community; she was a member of the UVM Extension Club, where she held many state office positions, a member of the Brattleboro Fire Dept. Auxiliary, a volunteer for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and a volunteer for The American Cancer Society. She was very artistic, and enjoyed rug braiding, cake decorating, making crafts, and painting. Gloria and her family spent summers at Spofford Lake; she loved to entertain and was a very gracious host to all her guest who would visit. She enjoyed keeping track of her many visitors by having them sign a guest book. She loved the outdoors and nature, up until 4 yrs. ago Gloria was still walking and hiking 5 miles daily. She love to travel and explore new places, her last trip was to Greece and Turkey with her granddaughter Sydney.

In addition to her parents, Gloria is predeceased by her husband John Barrett in 1993 and a sister Sydney Jean.

She is survived by three sons, James Barrett and his wife Allison of Hinsdale, NH, Stephen Barrett and his wife Helayne of Brattleboro, and William Barrett and his wife Terri also of Brattleboro; two daughters, Karen Barrett and her partner John Highter of Brattleboro, and Jean Bristol and her husband Gordon of Williamsville, VT; a brother, Bernard Nixon and is wife Ellie of Hinsdale, NH; four sisters, Phyllis Gorton and her husband Everett of TX, Joyce Larson of CO, Claire Tyminski and her husband Thomas of NH, and Maria Tarbox and her husband David also of MA; ten grandchildren, Matthew, Sydney, Ian, Will, Chelsea, Katie, Jen, J.J., Heather and Allison; six great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013 from 2PM to 4PM at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home, 57 High St., Brattleboro, VT 05301. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 16, 2013 at 10AM at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 47 Walnut St, Brattleboro, VT. Urn burial will follow at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Please consider donations to Living Memorial Park Snow Sports, Inc., P.O. Box 1945, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
