Godfrey (Buggie) William Dunning, a life long resident of Theodore and Fowl River, died peacefully on December 10, 2013 at a local hospital surrounded by his family. Buggie graduated from Theodore High School in 1956, opened a few books at Auburn University before answering his patriotic duty by enlisting in the United States Navy and serving from 1958 – 1962. While in the Navy, he was stationed on the USS Forrestall during the Cuban missile crisis and toured the Mediterranean. After being honorably discharged, Buggie returned to Theodore and went to work for Standard Oil Company and later the Mobile County Gas District as an engineer for 21 years. He retired and became self employed, following in his father's footsteps as a "jack of all trades" and friend to all he met. Buggie is a past commander and member for 39 years of the American Legion Post 250 at Fowl River. He was instrumental in the purchase of land and construction of the new Post 250 building, which was his pride and joy. He is also a member of the VFW Post 4329. Buggie loved to dance, have a good time and play golf with his sons and longtime best friend Jim Powe. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather.
Buggie is preceded in death by his father, Emmett Dunning; mother, Esther Jackson Dunning Loyd; stepfather, John L. Loyd; and brother, Jerry E. Dunning. He is survived by the love of his life of 35 years, Gayle Widder Dunning; children, G.W. (Tinker) Dunning II (Devette), David L. Dunning (Lori) and Victoria Dunning Jackson; one brother, Claude Dunning (Dorothy); grandchildren, Shan Grant, Natalie Howard (Lance), Kristen Kina (Sergio), Heather O'Brien (Michael), Jonathan O'Shea, Colby O'Shea, Hunter Landry, Zoe Dunning and Ian Dunning; great-grandsons, Brodie Howard, Aiden O'Shea, Liam Kina, Cale Smith and Wyatt Smith, plus a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many special friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the American Legion Post 250 Honor Guard. I love you Uncle Boogie! Gonna miss helping you fix plumbing on a neighbors house. and the family get together at Neil & Paw Paw's. You were sooo funny, watching you laugh as your belly shook. You were my best friend as a kid growing up and even more a wonderful person to many. I know how much you loved your wife (Gayle) and family. I'm gonna miss you very much! Wished life didn't get so busy growing up, so I could and should've spent more time with you. Goodbye Uncle Boogie! Love You!!
