Goldy McJohn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2017.

Our hearts weep as we announce the passing of Goldy McJohn, Founding Father of Steppenwolf. Goldy suffered a sudden and fatal heart attack the morning of August 1st, 2017. The family thanks all of those who have protected their privacy leading up to this announcement while they dealt with this unexpected loss.

Information regarding services will be announced as it becomes available. However, Goldy's next performance was to take place at a benefit concert honoring legendary drummer, Alvin Taylor, with good friends Terry Ilous, and Harold Brown among others. It is at the very core of his wife, Sonja's beliefs that Goldy would have wanted this show to go on. This concert, in full agreement of all participating, will now also stand as a tribute to Goldy and the indelible mark he has left on the world of Rock and Roll and the lives of all those who knew and loved him.

Goldy had been an active and enthusiastic mentor for Stand Up for the Music, working closely with HungryGenius managing partner, Anthony Spadaro.

"Goldy was an amazing soul and an incredible artist, and just plain fun. May his legacy live on forever." - Anthony Spadaro

"I connected with him immediately, may his transition be smooth." - Harold Brown

"Long live rock and roll. Love you Goldy." - Terry Ilous

I am entering this way after Goldy left for that big B-3 in the sky, but I just wanted to chip in. I was just learning to play the organ when I heard Steppenwolf (Goldy in particular)....and knew I had to get that sound, and try to emulate Goldy. So, I sold my Vox Continental, and got a B3/Leslie. Great sound...but I still didn´t sound like Goldy. So, I studied his chops and overdrove my Leslie...that sounded a bit better. It wasn´t until I saw Steppenwolf for the first time that I caught a glimpse of his technique. He had machine gun chops (I later read that John Kay called him kangaroo because of how fast he hopped on keys.
Years later, I stumbled on a chat site...and lo and behold, it was Goldy. So I sent him a message. And he returned my message very gracefully, and was a pleasure to chat with. He told stories of how he got that sound because of a blown driver in his Leslie that became his signature sound (even though he didn´t play a Hammond on the first album)...how he got "mislead" out of a lot of money...about playing in several bands in the Seattle area...etc. I said maybe I´d fly up to meet him, and he said "cool...see you then, Doc". Alas, it was not to be...
Goldy, may you rest in peace, knowing just how many young keyboard players you positively affected. You had a distinctive sound that no other B3 jockey ever emulated.

Goldy, thanks for your inspiration towards the keyboards. Your sound made it an easy choice to learn the keyboards. I was lucky that have had the chance to get to know you later on in life and to enjoy getting to know you and hearing your stories. I have played some of your music in every band I've been in, it's not R&R without it. Play hard and loud on that big stage.

Goldy was a huge influence along with the other members of Steppenwolf in 1970 when I first played the Live album. After many years of playing bass, due to a spine condition I switched to keyboard because I could no longer strap on that bass. I wrote to him via his facebook page and he replied to me, giving me the encouragement to continue on. Thanks to you my friend for providing me the music and inspiration. Hope to see you on the other side sometime.

I saw him in 1972 in Sacramento. Saw and met him in 2016 and took pics. The most exciting time of my life. He was so personable and he got to sit on my husbands beautiful BigDog motorcycle which Goldy loved! I've kept those memories close to me. My heartfelt condolences to Sonja and his family.

I got to know Goldy at my job. He was a customer and I always looked forward to seeing him when he came in. I loved listening to his stories and sometimes he'd bring me a CD of his latest projects. He was very personable. Always wanted to know how my family was doing. I loved hearing him laugh. I told him that my family and I were doing an outreach in the Philippines and helping families in the dumpsites and he brought me a box of toys to give to those kids. That meant so much to me. I was at his birthday party last year and it was such a treasure to watch him playing music. You could tell that it brought him such joy. I will really miss him. Sonja, I am so sorry for your loss.

I can't believe this!! Goldie was always so full of life and such a character!! It sounds like he went quickly, which I believe was a blessing for him. He had too much energy and vitality to hang around and linger on- I just don't think he would have tolerated that well.
Goldie, I'll always sing your songs in my bands, and remember your amazing fingers on the keyboards as they danced about with those fancy rings sparkling. And I'll always remember your quick witted sense of humor as we bantered and punned about.
My sincerest condolences to Sonja Goadsby, and to Goldie's family and friends!!!!

Magic Carpet Ride is one of my favorite Steppenwolf tunes. I bought their first two lp's because their sixties sound had depth and easy to listen to, great engineering and production. It was not the "whining guitar for ever San Francisco sound" of the times. I also bought their 16 greatest hits lp and cd. Their music was heard daily in Vietnam down in Saigon area. Memories of my 20-23 age! May God comfort his family with love and hope!

Believe it or not Born to be Wild was a song that you could hear in my 96 year old mom's house. I remember when my mother told me to go to the record store to buy Born to Be Wild in the 60s. I heard Magic Carpet Ride for the first time when I was 8 yrs old in the early days of summer of '69. It was coming from a high school graduation party out in the woods about 1/4 mile from our new house "out in the country." I just couldn't fathom how they powered those amps and speakers with no electrical outlets! Some things you never forget! Goldy's signature Hammond B3 sound drew me in and I still to this day have a love for rock-organ music. I thank Goldy and band mates for creating one of my all-time favorite memories. Rest in Peace Goldy!
