Gordon Stever Hillenberg, age 88, of Bloomington, died Sunday morning at the I.U. Health; Hospice House in Bloomington. Born August 12, 1924 in Oolitic, Indiana, he was the son of Stever and Minnie (Lewis) Hillenberg. He was a graduate of Bloomington High School, Class of 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the escort ship U.S.S. Newman. He was involved with the Pacific and Atlantic theatres and was heading to Japan when W.W. II ended. He was retired as an independent Allstate Insurance agent in Bloomington where he served for 35 years. He loved to play golf and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan and I.U. Basketball fan. He was a very loving husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, to whom he would have been married to for 65 years on April 9, 2013, Norma Dean (Deckard) Hillenberg, of Bloomington; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jack E Hillenberg, of Bloomington and Peter Scott and Karen Hillenberg, of Indianapolis; two-step-granddaughters and sons-in-law, Amber and Eric Hensley and Jessica and Brad Brinkman; four step-great-grandchildren, Lukus Brinkman, Rylan Hensley, Emma Hensley and Summer Brinkman; brother and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Jeanie Deckard, of Bloomington and Marjorie Deckard, of Bloomington and two nieces, Debby Deckard and Deanilee Deckard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Roy Hillenberg.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Deckard Cemetery Church in Brown County with Mr. Olan Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery where the Monroe County Veterans Honor Guard will provide military graveside rites. Friends may visit the family at Day Funeral Home in Bloomington from 12 Noon to 2:00 P.M. Wednesday.
