The Urada clan has lost one of its most-respected and well-loved members. Our hearts go out to Henry, Wayne, Wesley, and all the other relatives and friends who were close to Grace. She had a genuine interest in people and it showed in her friendliness, caring, and sense of humor. She had a keen awareness and sensitivity, but she knew when to be tactful and when to be blunt if need be.
As the last sister-in-law to join the family, I got to know Henry and Grace when they visited us in the 1970s and eighties. Our kids were growing up then so we spent a lot of time sightseeing, visiting other relatives in southern California, shopping, and even spending some holidays together. Whenever we came back from an outing, Henry and Grace always would want a fresh fruit snack.
We went to Oahu periodically. Our granddaughter, Alia, then four years old, seemed to hit it off with Grace as they conversed about her birds. Grace gave her a doll out of her vast collection. Grace also loved plants, handcrafts, collecting other things. And the now the pre-war glass menagerie she gave me years ago is even more meaningful.
Grace made a wonderful, lasting impression on our lives, never to be forgotten.

Grace and Henry got married in 1950 and she came to live on our family farm. My being the youngest in the family I was only 11 years old at the time. I have only fond memories of her and I was fortunate as she was like a second mother to me in my pre-teen and teenage years until I left for the mainland in 1959. In all those years, I have never seen her get angry. She always had a pleasant personality. I remember her asking me sometimes if I needed money before going out.
Later when I was married and settled down in California we looked forward to her and Henry visiting with us. They enjoyed going to Redondo Beach to pick up fresh northern crabs. I have included one of the pictures over the years of them eating crabs. Plus another picture of her playing cards with our children when they were young.
It is with great sadness to hear of her passing. Will miss her a lot.

My dear friend, you are without pain at peace! I remember the first time I met you in the 70s. I worked with Hank and thus began a life long friendship ... your smile was contagious! Your were always loving and happy, whether in Hawaii or the two weeks you visited me in Virginia..... The memories....your Silver Anniversary party at The Pagoda....lobster at PCT.....New Years Eve parties...so many precious memories. I am so glad I got to visit with you in 2014! God broke the mold when He made you.....One and Only. Love is eternal. Forever in my heart!
Love and Aloha....until we meet again...Brenda Axtell.

We will miss Aunty Grace deeply. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful video showing all her warmth and smiles through the years. She is someone who was always there for us like all of our Hawaii family. Dad says she was like a mom to him. I can remember fondly her voice and laughter in the dining room during her and Uncle Henry's annual visits to see us in Los Angeles. I will hold that memory in my heart.
Love, Lianne, Aiki, and Alia
