Obituary

Grace Fumi Akahoshi of San Jose, having reached the age of 100, passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2013. Born in Walnut Grove, California, Grace was the second daughter of Miwa Sano and Niichi "Ben" Noyoshi/Tatsuda.She married the late Joe Yoshiharu Akahoshi in 1937 and moved to San Jose. During WW II, she and her family were interned, as with other Japanese Americans, at the Relocation Center at Amache, Colorado. They returned to San Jose where she was active at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, Senshin Kai, Kumamoto Kenjin Kai, her husband's Big Sir organization and other community groups. Grace Fumi Akahoshi of San Jose, having reached the age of 100, passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2013. Born in Walnut Grove, California, Grace was the second daughter of Miwa Sano and Niichi "Ben" Noyoshi/Tatsuda.She married the late Joe Yoshiharu Akahoshi in 1937 and moved to San Jose. She will be fondly remembered by her daughter, Adrienne Reiko Iwanaga; son, Rev. Dr. Kenji Akahoshi and Karen; her sister, Elsie Kagehiro; grandchildren, Maya Iwanaga Pinkner (Jeff), Ryan Iwanaga (Meena), Garrett Akahoshi (Annie), Kirk Akahoshi, Courtney Iwanaga, Ashley Iwanaga (Roger); and 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Known as "Laughing Bachan" (Grandmother), she imbued temple activities with her inventive and creative entertainment programs. She was artistic and talented, as seen in her ikebana (flower arranging), art creations, temple choir participation and choreography. She leaves a legacy of joyful memories and many friends.The family is grateful to Sarah, Trish and the staff at Saratoga Retirement Community for their loving and attentive care. Their fond interactions with Grace affirmed their recognition of her outgoing personality.In celebration of her life, a Memorial Service will be held on November 23, Saturday, at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, 640 N. 5th Street, at 4:00 pm.
