Gregory Kowalczyk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 11, 2016.

On April 9, 2016, Greg passed away at home after a courageous battle with MDS and Leukemia. Greg
was born on July 21, 1948 and was raised in New Britain, CT. He served in the Army as an Airborne
Ranger during the Vietnam War, and proudly accepted the title of an American Veteran upon his return
from active duty. Greg started his new adventure in the small town of Cromwell, CT and working for
Guida's Dairy out of New Britain, CT. After working for 30 plus years with the dairy, wearing many hats,
Greg retired January of 2011. Greg's next adventure led him and his wife Barb to Daytona Beach, FL., where he volunteered his time helping the Grand Preserve Homeowners Association, going to the beach, and working in the yard. Both Greg and Barb are members of Prince of Peace Church in Ormond
Beach, FL.

Greg is survived by his wife Barb, of 13 years, partner in crime for more than 20 years; a stepdaughter
Megan Leahy of Middletown, CT; a stepson CPL James P. Leahy of USMC at Cherry Point, NC; his brother
Gene Kowalczyk, nephew Michael and wife Becky Kowalczyk, niece Teri Kowalczyk Farley and husband
Shawn all of South Windsor, CT; Dan Lawrence, his Father-in-Law and partner Judi Dold , both of New
Smyrna Beach, FL. Greg is predeceased by his parents Eugene and Helen Kowalczyk. Greg also leaves behind his
two sidekicks, Max and Mya, his rescue cats from the Halifax Humane Society. We must not be remiss if
we fail to mention his beloved Red Wrangler Jeep.

His laughter was bountiful and bigger than life and will be missed by all. Heartfelt thanks for everyone,
for their support during these last few weeks. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Florida
Hospital Hospice Center in Ormond Beach, FL. No calling hours. A memorial mass will be held on Friday,
April 15, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Church, 600 S. Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL.

I served with Gregg in Vietnam. We went through Recondo training in Nha Trang together and were on the same team for quite a while pulling many missions together. I last saw him when he stayed with us in New Orleans at our Ranger Reunion in 1992. We kept in touch for a while by phone when he lived in Ct. I worked outside the U.S. for many years and lost touch. I have been searching for him for many years. He was a great teammate and cherished friend. It is so sad that he is gone. This is especially sad because I am originally from Jacksonville and still have family there. To learn now that he was just 90 miles away is heartbreaking. Peace be with your Spirit Greg..RLTW

Greg, Mike and I spent Friday afternoon at The Cathedral in the Pines' remembering so many shared times with you! Walking in the woods, knee deep in the snow in New Hampshire, water skiing at Granite Lake--and your times at Glen Ellen, Vt. So many memories! So many tears! You were the Best Man at our wedding, and Mikes best friend for life! Love you and miss you.

Sending our deepest sympathy. Uncle Greg may you be at peace and not suffer any longer. You were a special part of our lives, not only being my God Father but someone who would always come and visit me at the dairy or call to say hello. But most of all being my father's best friend, you were always there for him thru thick and thin you never turned you back and for that I will truly always be greatful. May you shining down on us. Until we meet again.

Sending our deepest sympathies. May you rest in peace Uncle Greg. You were very special to my dad and our entire family. I remember the last time we talked and you told me how special the time was with my dad driving back to Florida and you told me friendships like that don't come around often. You are correct and I know how much it meant to each of you. We will hold these memories close until we meet again!

Dear Barb,
I hear Greg's laugher in the wind, and when I close my eyes I see his big smile. I hold on to the memories of him being part of our family and most important his dedication and commitment to being a Guida Guy. I know my Grandfather and father (Hank) have the gates open for Greg. He was in loving care with you all these years and he gave a lot of love, laughter, and good times to all around him.

Much love and peace,
Amy Zydanowicz

We're so grateful for the time we were able to spend with Uncle Greg over the last few years, when he came to CT and we visited in Daytona. We cherish the day we all went to Cape Canaveral together, and will hold onto those memories. Rest in peace Uncle Greg. We love you always.

Greg will be sorely missed. I always looked forward to seeing him and his little red Jeep as a laugh and a smile would follow. He had a wicked sense of humor and his "get things done" attitude and his hard, hands on work brought change to our development. I believe that people are to come into our lives for a reason. I'm a better person for knowing this courageous, hardworking lovely man.

Greg was one of my first friends when I started working at Guida's and one of the hardest working guys I ever met. He will be missed.
