He married Sarah "Sally" Marshall on December 6, 1959, in Seattle, Washington. They were sealed in the Oakland California Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, March 31, 1972. They have one child.

"Red" graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle in 1955. He then attended the University of Washington. He owned several businesses throughout his career, including a manufacturer representative business that spanned the West Coast, a financial services branch office, and a custom homebuilder. He concluded his career by building two commercial buildings in Mill Creek's Town Center.

His fun-loving and generous spirit uplifted many, especially his family and eight foster children. He served his church for many years, and particularly enjoyed serving the youth.
