Gunnel Meyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2017.

Gunnel Margareta Meyer
Gunnel Meyer passed away on September 12, 2017.
Gunnel was born in Gothenburg, Sweden on August 27, 1938 to Oscar Simon Zaar and AnnMarie (Dahlberg) Zaar. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Helmut Meyer.
Gunnel was very good with language and in Sweden she also learned German, English, and some French. After high school, Gunnel was over a year in the Swedish Air Force doing clerical work. Around 1961, Gunnel decided to go out in an adventure to the U.S. to seek out several of her aunts, uncles, and cousins that were scattered around South Dakota, California, Colorado Springs, Florida, and Austin. As she was in Colorado, her car broke down and with hardly any money, she had to look for a job. Her 90 year old aunt told her the only place to seek a job she would accept was at the Broadmoor. When she was doing the interview at the Broadmoor, she found an admirer, Helmut Meyer, who helped her with being a waitress as she was learning the more intricate parts of the language. They became fast friends.
Once Gunnel had enough money to go back and do the rest of her adventure, she found Helmut coming with her to Florida to spend time with her. In 1964, Helmut and Gunnel got married in Copenhagen, Denmark since it was between their two countries, Sweden and Germany where Helmut was born. They lived in Sweden for several years until they decided to go back to Colorado and both again started working at the Broadmoor. In 1968, they bought their first house on Vega Dr and in 1972, their son Eric, was born.
Gunnel became the stay at home mother who not just cared for her son and a lovable dachshund, but also took care of a garden. Gunnel loved to garden and had a green thumb with both vegetables and flowers. Gunnel loved the outdoors and loved the sun. She always felt that there just not enough sun in Sweden and she loved to soak in the sun's rays as much as she felt she could. Gunnel also was into nutrition and was into Shaklee for many years.
Gunnel was also a very talented singer and piano player and music was a passion. She enjoyed classical, jazz, and even Elvis Presley. She taught school music at the catholic school of St Mary's for a couple of years. She also sang in the church choir at Bethany Lutheran Church and was one of the few that started with Soli Deo Gloria when it first began. She was a soprano and her high voice was well known for hitting the higher notes. She also was the first to create in Colorado Springs, a Swedish service that started at 6am every Christmas Day called Julotta and many Scandinavians from all over Colorado would come to listen and be in the service.
Gunnel was very passionate about language and she became a Swedish teacher and interpreter. She interpreted many different written letters and even a book that was done in half Swedish and half English. She had quite a few students that became close friends.
Gunnel was a patient and yet stern teacher and mother. She was a loving wife who would do anything to help in health, both physical and emotional. She loved learning in many different subjects. She had compassion for many and always wanted to help those that she felt she could in her own way.
She is survived by her son, Eric Meyer of Colorado; her sister, Birgit or Bibi (Zaar) Palmlöf of Sweden; nephew-in-law, Mark Galle and his wife Debbie of Colorado; niece-in-law, Evelyn Stafford of Colorado; and both Mark and Evelyn's children and grandchildren as in-laws.
A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church at 1128 E. Boulder St Colorado Springs on September 23rd at 11am. Donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.

Eric: So sorry to hear that Gunnel passed away last week. It's hard to believe how many years we spent socializing with your family during the 80's especially. Lots of good memories and food at Thanksgiving at The Penrose Room and soirees at your house. Your parents were always such good friends to us especially when we first arrived from England and it continued on. Our thoughts are with you during this grieving time. Judy & Peter Coulson

Eric,
Thank you for letting me know.We are so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful woman. I sang in her choir for many years at the Julotta Services. The little church was always filled with people who loved the old Swedish traditions. She will be missed.
