Obituary

Mr. Harold F. Arnold, (Hank, Bud), age 88, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. He was born July 4, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey the son of Carrie M. and George V. Arnold. He grew up in Irvington, New Jersey. He graduated from Irvington High School in 1939. He played high school football for three years, made first team NJ All State Group Four, played three years of football at college and was a football official for 25 years. Mr. Harold F. Arnold, (Hank, Bud), age 88, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. He was born July 4, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey the son of Carrie M. and George V. Arnold. He grew up in Irvington, New Jersey. He graduated from Irvington High School in 1939. He played high school football for three years, made first team NJ All State Group Four, played three years of football at college and was a football official for 25 years. He received a BS Degree from Upsala College and Rutgers University and an MBA Degree from Seton Hall University.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army enlisting in 1942, served in England, France and Germany during World War II. He was a Tech Sergeant and served with the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force SHAEF with General Eisenhower. He played football with the SHAEF Invaders football team and was selected to the all European first team as the right guard. Hank was a life member of both the V.F.W and the American Legion. He was a member of the American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 and was the Post Finance Officer for many years. At the American Legion State Level, Hank served as Chairman of the Awards and Scholarship and at the National Level. Hank was Georgia's representative on the Magazine Commission, which published the American Legion Monthly magazine.

Hank was a member of the Statesboro Chamber of Commerce 1983 -1984. He was President of the Maplewood, N.J. Rotary Club in 1973 and President of the Statesboro Club in 1993. He was Lt. Governor for Rotary District 642 for six years and was also a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
Hank was employed by Payne Cutlery Corp. as Vice President from 1946 – 1961. He joined J. W. Wiss & Sons in June 1961 in Maplewood, N.J. as Plant Manager. In 1977, Wiss was purchased by Cooper Industries and moved the plant to Statesboro, Georgia in Jan 1978. Hank retired from Cooper Wiss in 1988 after being with the Wiss Company for 29 years.

Hank is a Past Master of the F & AM Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the Ogeechee Lodge F & AM, a member of the Statesboro Shrine Club, a member of the Scottish Rite, a member of Alee Shrine of Savannah, Ga., and a member of the Director's Staff of Alee Shrine Temple. Hank was honored by receiving the Shriner of the Year Award from Alee Shrine Temple in 1989. Hank was also the Director of the Royal Order of Jesters in 1995.
Hank was very active with Georgia Southern University Athletics and Foundation. He was a Charter Member of the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation since football started in 1981 and very rarely missed a football game both home and away. Hank not only loved football but had season tickets for the baseball and basketball games. Hank was very instrumental in getting the lights installed at Paulson Stadium. He also participated in the Day for Southern since 1981. Hank worked with the United Way as Team Captain for 15 years. Hank was awarded the Dean Day Smith Award in 1990 and then received the Dean Day Smith Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Harmony/Fellowship Sunday School Class.

His wife, the late Vivian R. Arnold, preceded him in death having been married for 50 years. Hank and Vivian have two sons Richard and his wife Lynn Arnold of Cincinnati, Ohio and Robert and his wife Judith Arnold of Fairport, New York. Hank has five grandchildren Nicholas and his wife Alissa Arnold of Nashville, Tennessee, Kelly Arnold and her husband Thomas Meyers of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tracy Arnold and her husband Bradley Chuck of Palm Desert, California and Russell and Matthew Arnold of Newport News, Virginia. He has five great grandchildren Corbin and Carson Chuck from Palm Desert, CA, Eleanor and Jonathan Meyers from Cincinnati, OH and Alexander Arnold from Nashville, TN. Hank also had one brother, George C. Arnold, who preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 18, 2010 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held Monday, April 19, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at Statesboro First Baptist Church with Dr. H. William Perry officiating.

The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Entombment will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Harmony/Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Royal Order of Jesters.
