Harold E. Nerzak, 70, a long time Otego resident, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2013 at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

Harold was born on April 1, 1943 in Sinsheim, Germany, the son of the late Ernst and Marta (Voll) Nerzak. In 1964, He moved from Germany to Carmel, New York. On January 13, 1965, Harold married Margarete Gleich in Carmel. The couple remained there for several years until moving to Otego in 1971, where they have lived ever since.

For over 25 years, Harold was employed at Corning Glass in Oneonta, where he was a tool, die, and mold specialist. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling and going for rides. It was nothing for him to just jump in the car and drive, with no particular destination in mind. He also liked to draw, but his favorite hobby was woodworking and working on his house. Being quite the handyman, if anything in the house needed fixing, Harold had it covered and he would do many of his own home improvements as well.

Harold was the type of man that would always put others before himself. If someone needed a hand, he would be the first in line to offer whatever help he could. He was a very devoted family man, who loved his grandchildren dearly and especially his Margarete.

Harold leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Margarete Nerzak of Otego; his son, Ralph Nerzak, and his wife Kimberly of Afton; his grandchildren, Trey and Erika Nerzak of Afton; his sister, Ute Hartshorn of Deltona, Florida; and his brother, Peter Nerzak, and his wife Nancy Neilsen of Louisville, Tennessee.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Renate Gleich of Frankenbach, Germany, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Harold was predeceased by his grandson, Derek Nerzak, and his brother-in-law, Douglas Hartshorn.

Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River Street, Otego, at which time his family will be in attendance.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Afton, 30 Caswell Street, Afton, with Pastor Chris Prezorski officiating. Burial will take place following the memorial service in the Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

In lieu of flowers, Harold's family asks that you kindly consider a donation in his memory to the Otego Volunteer Fire Department, 5 River Street, Otego, NY 13825.

Harold's family wishes to extend a special thank you to the doctors and staff of the Bassett Medical Center ICU for the wonderful and compassionate care he received during his time there.
