On Friday July 4, 2014, Harold Anthony Vermilyea, Jr. (Hal) passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood, CA surrounded by his family. He was born on May 22, 1926 in Denver, Colorado. He and his mother moved to Long Beach when he was five. He attended Long Beach Poly High until he joined the Navy to serve in WWII. In 1948, he met his forever wife, Betty and they were married on April 8, 1950. In lieu of a honeymoon, they became one of the founding residents in Lakewood and watched their home be built from the ground up in 1950. Also in 1950, the Navy required his services in Korea. On Friday July 4, 2014, Harold Anthony Vermilyea, Jr. (Hal) passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood, CA surrounded by his family. He was born on May 22, 1926 in Denver, Colorado. He and his mother moved to Long Beach when he was five. He attended Long Beach Poly High until he joined the Navy to serve in WWII. In 1948, he met his forever wife, Betty and they were married on April 8, 1950. In lieu of a honeymoon, they became one of the founding residents in Lakewood and watched their home be built from the ground up in 1950. Also in 1950, the Navy required his services in Korea. While in the Navy, Hal served on the USS Onslow and the USS Matsonia. After Korea, Hal went on to a career of over 40 years at McDonnell-Douglas building 466 aircraft. He still attended as often as he could the retiree UAW Local 148 meetings. He is survived by his son, Harold; his daughter, Cherie and son-in-law, Dan; grandchildren, Joey and Ashley, many great and great-great nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be on July 19th at 1:00 pm at Luyben-Dilday-Mottell Mortuary, 5161 Arbor Rd. Long Beach, Ca 90808. A reception celebrating his life will follow after the service at his home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the fund of a man who gave him another 15 years of life, the late, John P. Stein, M.D.
