Harriet Barlowe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 3, 2015.

Harriet Bruce Dodd Barlowe, 74, of Caswell Beach, NC, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Friday, October 2, 2015, following a brief illness. She was born September 29, 1941, in Raleigh, NC, grew up in Wake Forest, NC, and graduated from Meredith College, Class of 1963. While a student at Meredith, she met her future husband, Russ, on a blind date. They were married on April 22, 1962. They moved to northern Virginia where Harriet taught at Annandale Elementary and Centreville Elementary because she loved children. Later, she was employed by the US Department of Agriculture for 10 years. After Harriet and her husband retired, they moved to Caswell Beach in 2001. She enjoyed kayaking, gardening and long late afternoon walks on the beach looking for seashells. In addition, Harriet was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Southern Dames and the First Baptist Church of Wilmington.

The most important thing in her life was her family. After the passing of her two sisters, Harriet took responsibility for the extended family. She did her best to heal all wounds, mend all fences and keep the family together. She made that her mission in life. Harriet wanted to be the common bond for the family and she will be sorely missed.

Harriet is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Russell Graham Barlowe, Sr, sons Russell Graham Barlowe Jr. (Elena), Sacramento, CA. and Carey Bruce Barlowe (Valerie), Warrenton, VA; grandchildren Andrew Barlowe, Sacramento and Megan and Cameron Barlowe, Warrenton; sisters-in law Holly Rabinovich, Hillsborough, NC, and Felicia Howie, Monroe, NC; nieces Mary O'Hara Badgett, Winston-Salem, NC, and Eleanor Mangum Letson and daughters Miriam, Sarah and Rebecca, Wilmington, NC; nephews James O'Hara lll and children, Emilie and Leo, London, England, and James Mangum lll, Benson, NC; and close cousin, Elizabeth (Beth) Hailey, Hampstead , NC.

Preceding Harriet in death are her parents, Carey Newkirk Dodd and Margaret Elizabeth Green Dodd; sisters Francina Newkirk Dodd O'Hara and Mary Ella Dodd Mangum; and her beloved Corgi, Belle.

There will be a Celebration of Life service for Harriet at First Baptist Church of Wilmington on Sunday, October 11 at 2 PM, followed by a time of visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Brunswick Town DAR, c/o Nancy Mazzei, Treasurer, 542 Riverwood Dr. SE, Bolivia, NC 28422 or First Baptist Church, 411 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 or the American Cancer Society, 2202 Wrightsville Ave, Suite 111, Wilmington, NC 28403.

A memorial graveside service for Harriet will be held in Wake Forest in December.

Bob/Brenda Shepherd

A belated entry because we recently found out about Harriet's passing.
We met her through Russ after Bob and Russ, who had been classmates at NCSU, discovered they were both working for the Economic Research Service of USDA. Shared many pleasant visits in the 60s and a few later. Fond memories of Harriet, Russ and the boys. So sorry to hear. Our thoughts and prayers for the family. Bob and Brenda Shepherd

Losing a loved one is so very painful. I know Russ, Harriet's husband; her sons Graham and Carey; their wives and children, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends are all hurting with the knowledge that Harriet has passed away. She was such a gracious, gentle and kind lady. She will be missed by so many people. May the Peace of the Lord be with each of us during this difficult time.
