Tribute to Harry K. Harmon Sr.
Fondly known to us as, Uncle DD
From the beginning our parents limited access to us (their priceless cargo) and only close family members were allowed access. Our fondest childhood memories of Uncle DD were of him always rushing off during inclement weather to repair downed power lines while working for the phone company. This meant we could run wildly up and down their 2 story home like the misbehaved heathens we were, while our mother and aunts continued their gossiping, spelling of curse words in their conversations and drinking escapades inattentive to our unruly actions.
Does anyone remember the many times of trick or treating in their college park neighborhood? My fondest memories of Uncle DD were fishing trips with him and he would always buy us chocolate milk and huge shortbread cookies while purchasing fish bait and would swear us to secrecy because our parents prohibited our intake of any junk. I also remember catching Uncle DD dozing while fishing and Gloria and I jumped into the water to swim! Uncle DD did not know we were little fish and that we actually knew how to swim. He told us he almost had a heart attack because if there was one scratch on us when we were returned to our parents, they would have killed him on the spot!
We all learned from our Uncle as years passed first, he was a God fearing man and he loved the lord and secondly, he loved his family and was an unrelenting provider. As we celebrate his legacy today may we go in peace, knowing God has another warrior in heaven and those of us who are left behind can treasure our many memories until we meet our love ones on the other side. Rest easy Uncle DD much love to you from your nieces and nephew.
