Harry D. Gertridge, Jr., 91, of Dartmouth, died peacefully with his son and daughter by his side on Friday, October 19, 2012. He was the husband of Louise C. (Brooks) Gertridge, with whom he shared sixty-two years of marriage.

Harry was born in New Bedford, the son of Harry D. Gertridge, Sr., and Dorothy (Pomeroy) Gertridge. He was a life-long resident of the area.

Mr. Gertridge graduated from Dartmouth High School and served with the United States Navy Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology and worked as an engineer at the Acushnet Company for many years until his retirement. Harry was a member of Noquochoke Masonic Lodge of Westport and also Abraham H. Howland, Jr. Masonic Lodge of New Bedford and was the recipient of the Veterans Masonic Medal. He served as the clerk/treasurer for Dartmouth Fire Department District One for several years and was also a member of the American Legion.

Harry's greatest pleasure and pride was his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Glenn Gertridge and his companion, Wendy Catalano, and his daughter, Gail Touchette and her companion, Glenn Graham. He was the brother of Eleanor Brooks and her husband, Thomas, also of Dartmouth. He was the proud grandfather of five: Jenna and Drew Touchette, and Gillian, Ginelle and Graham Gertridge. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Audrey Brooks and a number of nieces and nephews. He was the brother-in-law of the late John Brooks and uncle of the late Kevin Brooks.

Harry's family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the nurses and caregivers in the Birch Cottage at Emeritus Assisted Living of Dartmouth Village and to the Community Nurse and Hospice Care for their compassion and kindness during his illness.

The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, from 4 - 7 PM at the WARING-SULLIVAN Home of Memorial Tribute at 230 Russells Mills Road, South Dartmouth. A brief Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that memorial contributions in his honor be made to Community Nurse and Hospice Care, P.O. Box 751, Fairhaven, MA 02719.

"We wish to offer our condolences to Harry's family. I worked in the office of Almeida's Auto Supply and enjoyed talking with Harry. He loved his family..." Marie & Jim Rousseau (Dartmouth, MA)
