Harry Smith, Jr. was born in Ferris, Texas to Harry Smith, Sr. and Bessie Smith, on January 26, 1923. The family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas where he attended Public Schools. He furthered his education in Lansing, Michigan at Sexton High School and graduated in 1945. Upon receiving several scholarship offers, he accepted the one to Texas College, in Tyler, Texas. He was soon called to serve his country in the United States Army. After completion of his military duty and receiving a WWII Victory Medal, he was Honorably Discharged. Harry Smith, Jr. was born in Ferris, Texas to Harry Smith, Sr. and Bessie Smith, on January 26, 1923.

The family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas where he attended Public Schools. He furthered his education in Lansing, Michigan at Sexton High School and graduated in 1945. Upon receiving several scholarship offers, he accepted the one to Texas College, in Tyler, Texas. He was soon called to serve his country in the United States Army.

After completion of his military duty and receiving a WWII Victory Medal, he was Honorably Discharged.

Mr. Smith later received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas College, in 1950 and later received a Master's Degree from Michigan State University.

He met his wife, Maxine M. Smith, at Texas College, whom he referred to as "Angel" in their relationship. They married on July 11, 1950 and moved to Lansing, Michigan. From this union, four children were born.

In 1951, Bro. Smith accepted Christ and was filled with the Holy Spirit, under the Leadership of E. Gladstone Scott, Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Lansing, Michigan.

The family later moved to Jackson, Michigan where he received a teaching position with the Jackson Public Schools, in 1960. During that time, Mr. Smith coached numerous sports for 18 years and also taught Driver's Education for 20 years. He retired from the Jackson Public Schools in 1988.

Mr. Smith was well known throughout the community and wherever he went. Mr. and Mrs. Smith traveled extensively throughout the United States in their Motor Home. He loved people and never met a stranger.

He was an active member at Second Baptist Church, in various capacities, under the Leadership of Pastor Amos P. Williams. These included Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Choir Member.

Bro. Smith was an avid singer who loved hymns and spiritual songs. Many people spoke fondly of his singing and comforting tenor voice.

He leaves to cherish the memory of his loving wife, Maxine M. Smith (Angel) of 63 blessed years, four children, Karen (Pastor McKinley) Williams, Bridgeport, MI., Dr. Janice K. Connor, Oak Park, MI., Kathy (Pastor Darrow )Parker, Mt. Pleasant, MI., Harry Randal (Doreen) Smith, Lansing, MI., nine grandchildren; Arshana, Arthur, Edward, Elijah, Blair, Becky, Deon, Kelieda Michelle, Randal Christopher, and six great-grandchildren.

Sister: Jeanette Smith Cobbs, Newport Richey, Florida

Nieces: Glenda (Marshal) Waggoner, Wichita Falls, Texas; Carolyn (Rev. Raymond )Foster, Wichita Falls, Texas; Rosemary(Edmond Trent-Powell) Wilson, Odessa, Texas; Susan Smith, Stockton, CA., Kimberly (Floyd) Barr, St. Paul, MN.; Norrine Nolan, Brooklyn Park, MN.

Nephews: Ricky Smith, Stockton, CA; Dale Smith, Stockton, CA., Roscoe Craft II, Columbus, OH; Owen (Sandra) Craft, Seattle, WA.

Brother-in-laws: Tony Nelson, Florida, Earl E. (Jo) Nelson, Florida, Herman (Rita) Nelson, Detroit, MI.

Sister-in-laws: Bernice Martin, Georgia; Claudette Nelson, E. Lansing, MI., and a host of relatives and friends.

Harry Smith was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Claude Smith & Willie Smith; and sister, Helen Smith Butler.

Home Going Service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Second Missionary Baptist Church (304 E. Prospect St., Jackson, MI. 49203) at 11:00 a.m. Family Hour at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 11:00a.m.- 8 p.m. Burial Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Tuesday October 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
