Harvey Burum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2013.

Harvey "Hob" Burum, 87 of Amarillo passed away January 16, 2013. Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2013 at Harvest Christian Fellowship with Larry Cox officiating. Entombment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum by Memorial Park Funeral Home. Harvey was born October 20, 1925 in Duncan, Oklahoma to E.T. Burum and Maude Sawyer. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and grand-father. From birth to 3 years of age he lived in Duncan and his family moved and farmed south of Hastings, Oklahoma where he attended and graduated from the Hastings schools. In 1944 he joined the Army and was destined to be part of the invasion force on D-Day but because of a life threatening sickness he was hospitalized and later sent on what was thought as an invasion of Japan. As his ship journeyed toward Japan the two atomic bombs were dropped on the designated cities and he was part of the first wave of troops to arrive as peace keeping soldiers. He repeated how much he liked the Japanese people and tried to learn as much Japanese as he could and loved using it throughout his life. He married Frances Evans of Waurika, Oklahoma on March 16, 1951 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He farmed and worked for Halliburton's for six years and later moved to Amarillo in 1959 where he started working for Pantex where he later retired in 1990. He came to know the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior in 1960 and attended Forest Hill Assembly of God, (Harvest Life Church) and served as a teacher, a Deacon, Treasurer, Royal Ranger Commander, visitation and served in many other roles. He loved ministering in Retirement Homes, street ministry, Faith City Mission, and going on Mission trips. He was admitted to the V.A. hospital where he received outstanding care and service from the team of doctors, nurses and administration from 2009-2013. Harvey celebrated 61 years of marriage. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth Hight and one brother, Jay Burum. Harvey is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Burum of Amarillo; sons, Rusty Burum of Amarillo and Neil Burum of Garden City, Kansas; granddaughters, Megan Schlabs of Charleston, S.C., Morgan Myers of Dallas, Macy Marrow of Austin, Jessica Burum, Tess Burum and Mattea Burum all of Amarillo; great-grandson, Judah Schlabs.
