A native of Durham, NC, Harvey was born July 23,1935, the youngest of 12 children of the late Henry Griffin Jacobs and Cornelia Turner Jacobs. He graduated from the first class of Duke University School of Inhalation Therapy in 1966 and became one of the first Registered Inhalation Therapists in North Carolina. He was a charter member of the North Carolina Society for Respiratory Care when it was formed in 1966 and served in many capacities including President and on the Board of Directors. Harvey began a 30 year tenure at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Medical Center) in 1970, 20 years of which he served as Director of Respiratory Therapy. He initiated and helped develop Central Piedmont Community College's Respiratory Therapy program. Under his leadership of the Respiratory Care Department, employees grew from approximately 25 in 1970 to 125 when he retired in 2000. He was a pioneer in his field, and many of the changes he implemented remain as standard method of care of the Respiratory practitioner today. Harvey served in the United States Air Force beginning in 1954 during the Korean War conflict and was honorably discharged in 1958. He was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.
Harvey was a man who enjoyed people and loved life. He was caring and generous and always willing to go out of his way to help someone in need. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and especially enjoyed playing his guitar in church and at the Willow Grove jam sessions. He was quite the handyman, loved tinkering with cars, had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great teacher, storyteller and provider. Harvey was loving and affectionate toward his family and was especially proud of his "favorite grandson," Sam.
In addition to his parents, Harvey was preceded in death by brothers Henry Jacobs, Garland Jacobs, Willie Jacobs, Percy Jacobs and Edgar Jacobs, all of Durham, and sisters Hazel Bridges, Ruby Bass and Thelma Lee, all of Durham, and Margaret Gunter of Sanford.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Cox Jacobs; daughters, Jill Jacobs Mullis and husband, Joe, of Monroe, and Amy Jacobs and fiance, Jason Nadalsky, of Waxhaw; and one grandchild, Sam Mullis, of Monroe. He is also survived by sisters, Gladys Strickland and Dorothy Plucker and husband, Vince, all of Durham; and his cat of 16 years, Elvis.
The family wishes to thank a special friend, Wilhelmenia King for all of her care and support throughout Harvey's illness, as well as Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region.
Harvey's family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews- Mint Hill Road. A service to celebrate his life will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2013, at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Mullis officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Those wishing to make a donation in his honor may contribute to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
