Hazel Blackburn Obituary

Hazel Herring Blackburn “Pinky,” age 97, widow of George Hiram Blackburn Jr., passed away May 12, 2017. She was born January 2, 1920, in a little town outside of Valdosta, GA, known as Ray City. Hazel was one of five children born to the late Grover C. and Coma Cooper Herring.



Her brothers Remer Herring, Frank Herring, and sister Francis Moore preceded her in death. Hazel was a member of Shandon Baptist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion.



She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Bass; son, George H Blackburn III “Fritz” (Mary); daughter, Gale Bostick (Tim); and granddaughters, Rosemary E Blackburn and Morgan E Bostick.



Hazel graduated from Macon Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 and served in the Army Nurse Corps as a 1st Lieutenant in North Africa and Europe during WWII. Hazel was a devoted mother and registered nurse providing care in the Columbia area until her retirement in 1982.



Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Dunbar Funeral Home Northeast, and the funeral will be held Monday, May 15, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery.



The family would like to acknowledge the Atria of Columbia for their love and care over the past year.
