Biography

CATAWBA – Hazel Smith Ledet , 77, of Catawba went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 3, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Sherrills Ford. Born on November 26, 1936 in Baldwin County, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Riley and Connie Smith. Hazel was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all that knew her. She was a member of New Life Baptist Fellowship Church and enjoyed singing in the choir, helping with VBS and children’s church. Hazel was a very loving and giving person and strong in her faith. She was a member of the Eastern Star in LA, MS, AL, and currently in the Catawba Chapter in NC, she was also member of the Elks Lodge in Houma LA. She was known for her Cajun gumbo. Hazel enjoyed doing hair for her friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Theodore Smith, John Riley Smith, W. C. Smith; sister, Pauline Gilbert; and grandson, Joshua Stanus. Survivors include her sons, Claude Renegar and wife Wendy of Catawba, Kelly Renegar and wife Janice of Taylorsville, Keith Dowdle of Catawba; grandchildren, Gene Renegar Jr. and wife Mandy of Denver, Jonathan and Jordan Renegar of Taylorsville; great-grandchildren, Tyler Payne, T.J. and Dakota Broadwell, Felicity and Brittany Renegar; sisters, Maudie Winchinski, Catherine Greene, and numerous nieces and nephews.
