Born January 11, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Cora and Fred MacLeod. Helen was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton and was active in the Girl Scouts in the 1950's with her daughters. She was an x-ray technician in Charlotte, NC before getting married. Helen loved knitting shoes for the Battered Women's Shelter and working in her yard and with her flowers.

She started hiking with a group known as "Walking on the Edge," headed by her friend, Joe Goble, who is ten years her senior. They hiked all over the mountains of North Carolina every Wednesday for over 15 years.

Most importantly, Helen was a loving Mom, Nanny and Friend.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, E. B. Clapp.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Mary Catherine Thornburg of Newton, Suzanne DeRue and husband, Jim of Hickory; grandchildren, Jennifer T. Roseman and friend, Tony Bailey of Conover, Nikki Thornburg-Lanigan and husband, Michael of Newton, Scott DeRue and wife, Kathy of Ann Arbor, MI, and Jim DeRue Jr.; great-grandsons, James Winstead, Zachary Winstead; great-granddaughter, Kerri Dillard and husband Jason, and their son, Cole Dillard; nephew, John Clapp and wife, Gladys of Greensboro; close friend and caregiver, Linda Hedrick of Claremont; many cherished friends and her rescue dog, Rocky.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory with Rev. Timothy Wepner officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
