Helen Van Horne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 21, 2016.

Helen Margaret Van Horne, 87, passed away at her residence in Virginia Beach.

From her birth on October 20, 1929, to her death on Sunday, she shared kindness, compassion, and love with family and dear friends. Helen was born in Keyser, West Virginia, to Harold and Cecelia Gray and raised by her grandmother, Laura Robinson, and her Aunt Hazel. Helen married Alfred Lee Van Horne, Sr. in Cumberland, Maryland, on September 25, 1948, and he was the love of her life.

Left to preserve her memory are her sons, Alfred Lee Van Horne, Jr. and his wife Lorraine, Robert Allen Van Horne and his wife Saundra, and David Wayne Van Horne; her daughter Laura Van Horne Sharp and her husband Jeffrey; twelve grandchildren and their spouses, Benjamin (Suzanne) Van Horne, Christina (Luis) De La Rosa, Allyson (Culbert) Carolino, Erin (David) DiDonato, Meghan Van Horne, Daniel (Tara) Van Horne, Joshua Van Horne, Katherine Sharp, Andrew Sharp, Jacob Sharp, Noah Sharp, and Claire Sharp; eleven great-grandchildren, Logan, Hannah, Connor, Seth, Jameson, Alexander, Callen, Ava, Jackson, Maxwell, and Eliza; and nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Lee Van Horne, Sr.; her parents; her brother, Richard Gray; as well as her sister, Cecelia "Pooge" Hastings, and Cecelia's husband Howard.

Helen had many interests and hobbies, and among her favorite were cooking, sewing, and watching (and occasionally ordering from) QVC. Helen was a member of Haygood United Methodist Church, Princess Anne Women's Club, Retired Officers Wives, and the Gold Unit Wives Club. While devoted to her church and other affiliations, Helen's greatest legacy will be her love for and support of her family.

The funeral service will be held in the chapel at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 26, with burial to follow.

A visitation precedes the funeral at 1:00 pm.
