Helen Elizabeth (Rhoades) Anthony, age 89 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 4:31 A.M. Tuesday October 11, 2011 at the Brethren Retirement Center of Greenville following a short illness. She was born May 16, 1922 in Darke County, Ohio and was the daughter of the late George H. and Anna Caroline (Bryson) Rhoades.

Helen was a 1940 graduate of Greenville High School and was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Greenville. She was retired from the Second National Bank of Greenville following 28 years of employment, starting in bookkeeping, then as a teller and later as manager of new accounts. She enjoyed the customers and her work, and was remembered for her pleasant personality and humor.

As an accomplished musician, Helen played both the piano and violin, and for many years sang soprano in the church choir. She loved sewing and quilting by hand, having made many beautiful and perfectly stitched quilts for her family.

Helen was grateful for her life on the farm, which included tending large vegetable and flower gardens, and helping whenever needed in the fields. She loved animals, especially horses and cats.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Carl W. Anthony, to whom she was married October 9, 1948; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Anthony in 2001; and one granddaughter, Lauren Melissa Courtney in 2000.

Helen is survived by one daughter and son in law Deborah and Daniel Lacey of Dayton and one granddaughter and her husband Kristin Elizabeth and Ryan Wilson of Los Angeles, CA; two half-brothers, Steve (Sue) Rhoades of Wardensville, W. VA., and Richard (Marilyn) Rhoades of Greenville; special friends Mary and John Suter of Greenville, and faithful kitty "Rosie".

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 14, 2011, in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church 131 East Fourth Street, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Peter Menke officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday one hour prior to the services in the Church.

The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Greenville, The Darke County Humane Society or the Hospice of Darke County.

Funeral arrangements by Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio.

Condolences for the family may be sent to www.zecharbailey.com.
