HELEN MARIA GOODSPEED
April 24, 1911 – June 11, 2014

Helen Maria Goodspeed of Orleans and Chatham passed away peacefully at the age of 103 on June 11, 2014 at the Cape Cod Hospital after suffering a massive stroke. She was born on April 24, 1911, the daughter of the late Prince Harding Goodspeed and Relief Ellen Ellis Goodspeed. She was born, educated, and lived most of her life in Chatham, a town that she really loved.

She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters: George W. Goodspeed Sr., Percy Howard (Tony) Goodspeed, Prince Ellenwood Goodspeed, Eliza Goodspeed Bloomer, and Lucille W. Goodspeed.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Leona Goodspeed, and the following nephews, nieces and their extended families: Benjamin K. Goodspeed, George Goodspeed Jr., Gladys G. Lumpkin, Karen Goggins, and Roxane Carnes. She was proud of them all. She felt lucky that most of them all lived near-by and she saw them regularly.

Helen is believed to be the last surviving member of the Chatham High School Class of 1929 which had 22 graduates. She focused on the commercial classes taught by Mrs. Mabel Nicholas and was the captain of the Championship Girls Basketball Team.

She spent 3 summers working in the plant at Acme Laundry. Then in March of 1931 that she put those commercial skills to work at the office of the Acme Laundry Company, Inc. where she stayed for 17 years.

Then she switched to Chatham Trust Company where she stayed for almost 40 years. She served as Asst. Vice President, Asst. Treasurer, Loan Officer, and Notary Public. When the Chatham Trust Company merged with the Bank of New England-Barnstable County in 1979, she continued as Asst. Treasurer and Banking Officer until her retirement. She was truly ahead of the time. Most officers in banks were still men.

After retirement she moved to Orleans to live with her brother, Percy and his wife, Millie. She continued her cherished friendships from the banking world and made many new ones.

She was always interested in the family and the current news. She had fond memories of Chatham and always wanted to know anything happening in town. She was a lover of children, birds, flowers, and animals-especially dogs. She enjoyed dancing and was a devoted Red Sox fan.

She enjoyed talking about olden times like going to visit her grandparents in Brewster by horse and buggy when they would spend a whole day or dances in their barn in West Chatham.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 20th at the Nickerson Funeral Home at 87 Crowell Rd. in Chatham, MA at 11:00 A.M. preceded by an informal gathering for family and friends at 10:00 A.M. A private burial will follow.

She will be buried in the Goodspeed plot in Union Cemetery in Chatham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Please note that the donation is given in the memory of Helen M, Goodspeed. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
