Helen Loraine Masian "Bami" Kaun
March 12, 1930 – June 4, 2013
Helen Loraine Masian Kaun ("Bami") was born March 12, 1930 in Hamtramck, MI. Astute friends will notice she has died at age 40. She was a first generation American born of Polish immigrants. She was proud to be an American though she cherished her Polish heritage.
She was married to Wallace Kaun for 40+ years, and though they parted she kept close ties with his large Russian family. The union produced three children: Gail (Chuck), Lori, and Paul (Kim) who all survive her.
In 1968 Helen moved with her family to Athens, GA, where she remained until her death. She spent many years working at the General Time Corporation, and after her retirement she fulfilled a life long dream of visiting the Vatican in Italy. Since retirement didn't suit her very well she returned to work at the Environmental Protection Agency in Athens where she stayed until 2011.
In recent time Helen became ill and bore her infirmity with extreme dignity. She was a faithful parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church for over forty years and attended Mass every Saturday evening until nearly the end. Helen taught us all the meaning of loving each other despite our many human frailties, including her own.
Besides her children "Bami" is survived by five grandchildren: Katie (Bruce), Ryan, Eric, Kaylin and Jamie. Her children, grandchildren, and numerous friends will miss her sense of humor and zest for life. They will spend many years trading "Bami" stories and appreciating that she never left us, she just used up her nine lives.
A funeral mass will be 11AM Saturday, June 8th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with interment to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6pm-8pm Friday, June 7th with a Rosary being said at 8PM.

I am saddened to learn about the passing of Helen. We worked together at General Times and stayed in contact for several years. She was a very caring person and funny, too. We shared many family stories.... She attended our marriage in 1987, came to our home in 1999 to congratulate me on my UGA graduation, and attended my retirement reception - Athens First in 2001. We exchanged Christmas cards for several years. She was always smiling and, we enjoyed seeing each other.

To my wonderful cousins and your families, we send so much love and many prayers your way. Our hearts are with you today, tomorrow and in the days to come. I knew my Aunt Helen a long time and I have very fond memories. Distance kept me from knowing her truly as well as we all would have liked. I believe I knew her heart. And, I think the wonderful children/grandchildren she leaves with us are testament to what a special person she was. God's Blessings.
