NEW BERN - Helen Levas Masouras died April 27, 2013, after a brief illness. She was born in Connecticut to John and Bessie Levas of Greece on June 25, 1917. She was predeceased by her husband, James Constantine Masouras, in 1986. The Maoureses were founding members of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Fayetteville, NC. Helen served Sts. Constantine and Helen as its organist and choir director for more than 30 years. The Sunday school children recognized Mrs. Masouras for outstanding service for more than two decades, and the chinch also honored her as Mother of the Year. NEW BERN - Helen Levas Masouras died April 27, 2013, after a brief illness. She was born in Connecticut to John and Bessie Levas of Greece on June 25, 1917. She was predeceased by her husband, James Constantine Masouras, in 1986. The Maoureses were founding members of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Fayetteville, NC. Helen served Sts. Constantine and Helen as its organist and choir director for more than 30 years. The Sunday school children recognized Mrs. Masouras for outstanding service for more than two decades, and the chinch also honored her as Mother of the Year. Mrs. Masouras was a member of the Fayetteville Woman's Club, the Philoptochos Society, and the Hellenic Women's Club of which she was president from 1958-1960 and again from 1980 -1981. After the death of her husband, she moved to New Bern, NC, where her daughter Cathy lives. She was a member of the Twin Rivers Quilters Guild, AARP, and enjoyed knitting, playing the organ, sewing, and crossword puzzles as well as flower gardening.
A private family service will take place in Fayetteville, NC, and her long-time friend and priest, the Reverend Chrysostom Manuel will officiate.
Helen Masouras was mother, mentor, and friend to many relatives and friends. She is survived by her brother, George John Levas of Long Island, NY, her daughters, Cathy Masouras Smith and her husband, J.Troy Smith of New Bern, and Chrisoula Diamantis Skenteris, Alexandria, VA; her sons, Dean James Masouras and wife, Regina Masouras of Fayetteville; Jordan Christopher Skenteris, Alexandria, VA; and L. Davis Cooke, Jr., and wife, Jennifer Spence Cooke of New Bern. Also, her survivors include her grandchildren Cathleen Rivenbark Smith, Concord, NC, Dean and Gino Masouras of Fayetteville, Roula Skenteris Chulkas, Greenville, SC, Christopher Jordan Skenteris and Artemis Skenteris Dimopoulos of Alexandria, VA, John George Levas, Long Island, NY, and Cynthia Levas Stadum and her husband, David, of Farmingdale, NY. Mrs. Masouras' great grandchildren are Catina Smith, Concord, NC, Brock Smith, Myrtle Beach SC, Katie, Chrissy, Maria, and Artemis Chulkas of Greenville, SC, and Thalia Dimopoulos, Alexandria, VA. Her nephews, Harry and Constantine George Kledaras, and her niece, Linda Kledaras live in Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to honor Helen Levas Masouras be sent to Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 614 Oakview Avenue, Fayetteville, NC 28305.
