Helen Louise Muehlenbein 90 a long time resident of Plainfield, IN and recently of Carmel and Indianapolis, departed this life on October 22, 2012. She was born in Vanderburgh County, Evansville, IN to Michael T. Schlaffer and Matilda L. Schlaffer (Huck) in February 1922. She graduated from Reitz High School, Evansville, IN and from Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis, in Association with Wellborn Hospital School of Nursing, Evansville, IN in 1945 and was a retired Registered Nurse. Helen during her childhood was a member of Zion Lippe United Church of Christ, Mount Vernon, IN and during her adult years a member of Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, Indianapolis, IN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Evelyn (Schlaffer) Gabe and the love of her life and cherished husband of 61 years, Paul Edward Muehlenbein. Helen is survived by her son Dan E. Muehlenbein, daughter-in-law Karen M. (Vanderfleet) Muehlenbein, sister-in-law Darlene (Muehlenbein) Breiner, (husband John), and brother-in-law Ralph Muehlenbein. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews of the Gabe and Breiner families as well as many great nieces and great nephews and two great great nephews.
Helen has wonderful friends close at home, in Fort Myers FL where she and Paul spent their winters after his retirement, at the Hoosier Village and from throughout the world that they made during their travels.
Helen respected all forms of life, from the small caterpillar on her parsley plant to the larger beast she would see while traveling the Continents. She loved her dogs, she loved growing flowers and gardening.
She always had a story to tell, a compassionate ear for listening, and always offered words of encouragement when needed and was "Aunt Helen" to many. She was one of the most heart loving individuals you would ever want to meet. She was constantly looking out for the downtrodden and one of her greatest joys was doing something to make someone a little bit happier and their life a little bit easier. One of her greatest joys in this regards was in conducting a clothing and school supply drive for the Blue Lake Chapter House on the Navajo Indiana Reservation in New Mexico and then personally accompanying the loaded truck to the reservation for distribution. There were many who thought of her as an Earth Angel.
Her funeral service will be 11:00AM Thursday October 25, 2012 in Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, 603 North New Jersey St., Indpls. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Alexander Memorial Park, 2200 Mesker Park Dr., Evansville, IN 47720 with an interment service at 4:00PM (CST) October 25, 2012 at the Mausoleum Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Building Renovation Fund", Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, 603 North New Jersey St., Indianapolis, IN 46202. Arrangements entrusted to Little & Sons Funeral Home www.littleandsonsbeechgrove.com
