HENRIETTA EMILY (LURIX) TABER, 93
Of Bridgeport CT, Bangor and Orrington ME, Zephyrhills and Palm Bay FL- The steadfast loving heart of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend has "moved on", as she put it, to be with her Lord, Jesus on Saturday, March 11, 2017.
Retta passed away peacefully at the home of her loving granddaughter Sarah and husband Phil Pezan in Oviedo, Florida, who have cared tirelessly for their Grandmother at the end of her life. Born at Bridgeport, Conn., on March 8, 1924, she was the sixth and last surviving of the eight children of Albert and Mary (Swanson) Lurix. Retta graduated with high honors from Bridgeport's Central High School. She was night shift supervisor at the Bridgeport Western Union office in early 1943 when she took a telegram for an Army serviceman, Norman P. Taber of Bangor. After exchanging letters for three years while he served in Europe during World War II, they were married in Bridgeport in 1946. On September 2, 2016, they celebrated 70 years of marriage. Retta is survived by her loving husband Norman and their four children, Mike (Jeanne Labuda) of Hampton VA, Dan (Mina Joy Ramos) of Claremont CA, Cathy of Dacula GA, and Patrick (Shari) of Veazie ME; also seven grandchildren, Danica and Emily Taber, Sarah Pezan, Kristen Wood, Karen Giera, Erik Townsend, and Brandy Laws, ten great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and beloved sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a dear sister-in-law, Ada Taber of Brewer.
Retta’s Maine life after the War was a contrast to her city upbringing: fishing, hunting, growing vegetables, raising chickens and pigs, picking blueberries, Cub Scout Den Mother. As their children became teenagers, she entered the newspaper business, mainly as a supervisor in the obituary and classified advertising division for the Bangor Daily News; and later as a bookkeeper for Harding Florist in Brewer. Her religious pilgrimages included traveling with friends to Medjugorje in former Yugoslavia.
For close to 20 years Retta and Norm joined in the snowbird migration, driving to Zephyrhills, Florida, to spend the Winter. They each had a brother and sister spending their Winters there, and finally made the Sunshine State their year-round home.
Retta is known for her deep religious faith, her acceptance of others, her daily celebration of life and embrace of its limitations, and a gift to console and heal that was cherished by many. Her life was based in Catholicism, her vast extended family, and her commitment of service to humanity. She is sorely missed, and yet she lives on within our hearts.
The family wishes to thank the many friends and caregivers that have touched Retta’s life in her final months. They would especially like to thank Dedra Dillon Lincoln, Hospice of the Comforter and Dr. Rose Appel-Brown for their kindness and excellent care of Henrietta.
