Dr. Funderburk was born in Carrollton, AL in 1931, and grew up working on his grandparents' farm. He attended Auburn University where he received agricultural degrees, and then served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant at Ft. Sill, OK and Ft. Hood, TX. After continuing his education at LSU attaining a PH.D in plant physiology, he returned to Auburn where he worked 30 years as a professor and researcher, dean, vice president, founding chancellor of the Montgomery campus, and president of Auburn University.
