Obituary

Henry J. Lombness, 88, of Yakima was born on Sept. 28, 1924, in Grand Forks, ND, to Joseph Lombness and Ada Williams. He passed away on November 14, 2012 at Cottage in the Meadow. At the age of 16 (lying about his age), he enlisted in the Army in Oct. of 1940. He was a paratrooper with the 81st Airborne, serving in Naples, Normandy, Rheinland, Ardennes and central Europe. He paratrooped into Normandy the day before D-Day. He was discharged in August of 1945. Henry worked as a firefighter with the Yakima fire department from 1950 to 1971. Henry J. Lombness, 88, of Yakima was born on Sept. 28, 1924, in Grand Forks, ND, to Joseph Lombness and Ada Williams. He passed away on November 14, 2012 at Cottage in the Meadow.
At the age of 16 (lying about his age), he enlisted in the Army in Oct. of 1940. He was a paratrooper with the 81st Airborne, serving in Naples, Normandy, Rheinland, Ardennes and central Europe. He paratrooped into Normandy the day before D-Day. He was discharged in August of 1945. Henry worked as a firefighter with the Yakima fire department from 1950 to 1971. After retiring, he worked at the Vancouver School for the deaf as a house parent. He was an advisor for Ears for the deaf and taught sign language classes at Yakima Valley Community College. Henry was also a past president of YVAD and was an interpreter for the deaf.
He loved woodworking, playing cards at the Elks, Olive Garden and a good glass of wine!
Henry is survived by his first wife, Florence Lombness of Yakima; daughters, Lily (Fred) Richmond of Tacoma and Karen (Les) Harvey of Selah; son, Gary Lombness of Spokane; grandchildren: Carey (Rob) Hawkins, Tonja (Dave) Asbell, Scott (Ronee) Lombness, Tara Estes & Ryan Harvey of Yakima; he is also survived by 6 great grandchildren & a brother, Joe (Betty) Lombness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his second wife, Ruth (Miller) Lombness, two sons, Edward and Michael Lombness and a grandson, Christopher Richmond.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2012 at Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Cottage in the Meadow, Hospice would greatly be appreciated. To share a memory of Henry, please visit www.keithandkeith.com.
